This is an excellent apartment. It is well-maintained, spotlessly clean, quiet, and well-furnished. It has all the modern conveniences--clothes washer, dish washer, TV, etc. The apartment has secure off-street parking. But be aware that navigating to/from your parking space and the garage entrance can be challenging. The apartment owner--Kath---and her local manager--Ana-- are very helpful. You can pay your rental fee by credit card--very convenient. Be aware that in Portugal you are allowed to withdraw only Euro 200 twice a day from an ATM. Obidos is still a medieval town endowed with its defensive walls and castle. You can walk the walls if you are sufficiently sure-footed; there are no hand-railings. The castle is now a pousada. We checked out the pousada and would not encourage anyone to stay there. It is in need of serious upgrading. Unfortunately the pousadas in Portugal pale in comparison to the paradors of Spain. This might be because the Government seems to have delegated overall management of the pousadas to a private firm that is not the most up-to--date in the world. Their reservation system is third world. It is time for the Government to pay attention to the management of its historic hotel sites. Be aware that it is a steep walk uphill from the apartment to the main street in Obidos. Also that street is well-endowed with tourists visiting from tour buses. You can essentially "do" Obidos in an afternoon, but it is a good location for visiting other historical sites in the area. From Obidos we visited Batalha, Tomar, and Mafra. We also visited Nazare and consider it forgettable. Portugal's highway system is first-rate, although the tolls are high. How to improve the apartment? First, connecting to a WiFI system. While there is free WiFI up in town, the thought of climbing that steep hill to get on line is deterring. And in this day, some of us live on our laptops 24-hours a day. Second, there is no AC, a portable AC, or fan. While the basement bedrooms are likely to be cool in summer, and summers may be cool in Obidos, we would want to be sure that we would not roast in August. The only restaurant in town we tried was the O Caldeirao. It was not that good. We recommend trying other restaurants in Obidos with a higher ranking on Trip Advisor.
