Comfortable place for a family visit

4 of 5
Our three-generation party of five (mother, father, toddler, infant, grandmother) had a comfortable one-week stay at Sharon's house. The best thing was being able to spread out and relax. With three bedrooms upstairs, a large living room downstairs, plus the roomy basement, everyone had privacy and we were able to vary things for the kids even on days when we were mostly at home. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, communication with Sharon was excellent, the neighborhood was pleasant, street parking was plentiful, and the SEPTA train station was an easy walk: all as advertised. It was a treat to find the basement stocked with puzzles, games, and children's books, and to find helpful guidebooks on the dining room table. I loved the Weaver's Way food coop (five minute drive) and the Malelani Cafe sandwich/tea shop at 6734 Germantown Ave (betweenPelham Rd & Westview Ave, a 10-15 minute walk). There were some downsides. First, if you do want to spend a lot of time in Philadelphia proper, you will soon get tired of either taking the train or driving. We would have regretted our choice of lodging if we hadn't been hampered by the kids and our desire to save money for a week's stay. Second, the fact that the trains only run once an hour makes this option somewhat less convenient than we had anticipated. Third, there is no bathroom on the ground floor. We also got pretty tired of going upstairs or to the basement every time the toddler needed to use the toilet! Fourth, the kitchen does not have a dishwasher. Finally, while the kitchen is functional it is, like many rental kitchens, eccentric. There are too many pots, making it hard to negotiate the cupboards; at the same time, there aren't really enough oven-ready pans. The knives are dull and the manual can opener is broken. All in all we feel we made the right choice and would recommend the house to other travelers with similar needs.

My wife and I stayed here with two other friends while in Philly for our daughter's engagment party. The place was awesome! Pam set us up with a great little breakfast that was nice after a late arrival. There was plenty of room to have our family over after the party and sit around the dining room table. Very clean with plenty of room, plenty of parking, and very comfortable. I will stay here again if I'm in the Philly area! Thanks Pam!

Quite simply a home away from home

5 of 5
The Gathering Place had everything we needed and more. The home's design and furnishings were classical turn-of-the-century while still having all the modern conveniences, including beautiful bed and bathroom linens, a fully stocked kitchen and Wi-fi. The owners came over personally upon our arrival to give us a quick tour of the home and made us feel like family in town for a visit. The Mount Airy area had so much to offer in restaurants, shops and breathtaking architecture and it was only a quick 20 minute drive to the heart of historical downtown Philly (having a private driveway at the house was a definite bonus too). Thanks to the ample supply of brochures provided by the owners, we were able to find some great places to visit over the weekend, including the Mutter Museum and Eastern State Penitentiary. We enjoyed all that Philly had to offer and were able to rest easily at the end of each day in our comfortable beds in a peaceful and quiet neighborhood. While the weather outside in mid-February was a bit chilly, we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the City of Brotherly Love thanks to the Mitchell's warm hospitality.
