Vacation within a Vacation

5 of 5
My Mom and I have started a tradition of doing Mother/Daughter trips for the past 6 years. This year Mom wanted to learn about and experience the Amish way of living. We were fortunate enough to be joined this year by my husband. We chose to stay at Herb and Dawn's apt. Little did we know what a perfect choice this would be. This place is absolutely amazing, the pictures don't do it justice. The apt. itself is very very clean and we felt right at home. The gardens are absolutely amazing and beautiful. Staying here and being able to enjoy the gardens is like a vacation within a vacation. Herb and Dawn are very welcoming, but not too intrusive if your looking for privacy. We talked to Dawn after being there a couple of days and told her what we were interested in for our vacation and she gave us all kinds of information and told us of places we should go to that were owned by the Amish and weren't so touristy. The house itself is surrounded by Amish farms and beautiful scenery. We were there during harvest season and were able to see the Amish harvesting their corn fields. We would take walks in the morning or evening and everytime we would pass by Amish riding in their buggy's. There is an Amish school right down the road from the house. The location of this apt. is perfect if you want peace and quiet and to be surrounded by and witness the Amish way of living. Highly recommend eating a breakfast sandwich made by a little Amish lady in Churchtown at a place called Olde House Bakery and deli, she also has freshly made pastries, coffee, homemade bread, and Chicken Pies, which are amazing!! We took a tour of the area with Herb, we highly recommend this. He is very informative, he also took us through a couple of covered bridges on our tour. I highly recommend that you get any groceries you need from local farmers or Amish markets. Don't bother with Walmart. The local produce is in abundance and fresh. There is a place called September farms, it's only about a 10 minute drive from the apt., they have excellent sandwiches and quite a few groceries, including milk, sandwich meats and cheeses. We went to Gettysburg one day while we were there(2 hour drive). We also went to Hershey for a day(1 hour drive). We went to see Moses at the Sight and Sound theatre in Strasburg (highly recommend this). It's worth driving to different places and having this beautiful place to come home to in the evening. We would love to come back one day!!

We enjoyed the Carriage House and the location. The hidden gem exceeded all our expectations! The Carriage House and property was a true treasure to find. The location was awesome and allowed us to explore new areas. I would recommend the Carriage House to all! My parents plan to stay at this location in the future!

Very nice home. Very comfortable and quite.

This is home is located in a village. It was a nice idea with stores on the bottom and living quarters upstairs. Not very many stores are there and the ones that are, is only open on certain days. However, the home itself is very nice and comfortable and quite. Outside the window you see the beautiful fountain and a wonderful little quaint restaurant, which served great food. The village was nice to walk in the evening. The residents that live there are very friendly. We enjoyed talking with them and meeting them. The location of the house is very convenient to Cornwall , Reading, and Lancaster, which we visited and toured.
