Fishing, crabbing, clam digging, nature watching all in one locale!

            4 of 5
This property is located in Charleston and borders Coos Bay. Walmart was a huge help for our family of 8 adults and 2 children and was only about 15 minutes away. The locals here are extremely helpful and friendly. We went crabbing on the charleston pier near the boat docks and caught a few crabs even for June which is early for crab season. We went to Chucks seafood and got 60 oysters for $27. What a deal! We chartered "The Betty Kay" and everyone caught their limit of rock cod and some ling cod within 2 hours! Bam Bam and Captain Katie were an awesome team! Once we docked there was a team that even filleted all those fish for $5 a bucket full of your catch. We also got great advice from a local passerby walking his dog who literally took us to the spot near the "Dome House" that was a pathway to the best clam digging spot! We dug out quite a few extremely large Gaper Clams and lots of others. We had a great clam BBQ that night! Bastendorff is a great open beach nearby that our kids enjoyed and even surf fished in. We took an hour drive to Silver and Golden Falls and saw two beautiful waterfalls! Jim is the owner of this home and lovingly calls this place "The Deer House". We quickly found out why! Our second night there we had a beautiful doe visit the backyard with her little fawn. It was a sight to see. We were visited by others a few more times over the course of our stay. The home does have an ocean view but is not directly on the bluff and is across a somewhat busy main street to the ocean. Never the less we enjoyed watching fishing boats pass by and the sunset over the ocean as we sat in the living room. Jim the owner and George who manages the property were always very prompt on any communication or emails I would send out. Jim was also kind enough to give us great ideas of places to go and when to clam. He even emailed me with the tide chart for the time we were staying so that we would know the best times to go clamming. He was also kind enough to let us borrow his crab pots helping us save money on renting them. You can tell Jim has a lot of pride and enjoys his vacation home very much. The home itself has all the amenities you need to stay comfortably. It is in no means luxury and may need some updating and some newer bedding would bring the place up a notch (yes, I'm such a city girl from Los Angeles ;) But for the price and the amount of family I had staying it was a GREAT value! Thank you Jim for helping us make our trip so memorable!
