"Down North" Charm

5 of 5
Reviewed alot of VRBO rentals before selecting "Maggie's". Loved the charming old farmhouse in the pictures which looked like it "belonged", and was not disappointed when I saw it in person. The pictures do it justice, beautiful shady yard, open deck, comfortable, lived-in, interior. On arrival our hosts had a homemade blueberry (from local wild blueberries!) waiting on us, and a handwritten note on the back of a piece of dried birch bark bidding us welcome to Cape Breton. (Disclaimer is that you have to make sure you arrive in peak blueberry season if you want the berry pie!) We covered alot of territory on our week long trip, mostly on Cape Breton, and Maggie's is a good location from which to venture out in all directions; close to the entrance of Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the gorgeous hikes and views along the Cabot Trail, and an easy day trip to the Fortress at Louisburg to name a few . At the end of each full day we looked forward to returning to the relaxing surroundings at Maggie's. The house and property are clean and well maintained. The hosts could not be more generous and welcoming, and full of information about the area. A couple of the local delicacies we enjoyed (aside from the blueberry pie!) was the seafood chower at Neil's Chowder House in Neil's Cove, and the every present Scotsburn icecream, lots of flavors to choose from! Would definitely recommend a trip to Cape Breton, and a welcoming stay at Maggie's!

Outstanding Cottage in Beautiful Location

5 of 5
I have found that 5 stars are too often given so that the rating starts to lose its meaning. This truly is a 5 star property. It is beautifully designed and built with pine- planked inside walls that lend such charm and interest. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, a rarity and yet so helpful with a larger family or couples traveling together. There's plenty of space for privacy and also for interaction. The furniture is very nice and actually comfortable...as is the King bed (didn't try the others.) We ate all breakfasts and dinners there so really appreciated the high-end appliances (especially the Jenn-Aire duel fuel stove/oven) and the gas grill. And then there's the magnificent view from the house, from the porch, and from the firepit with chairs area right by the water. And the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep. And then there's the porch. since the photos on this site were taken, beautiful, high quality couch, chairs and tables are now present...we practically lived on that porch. This truly is one listing that is even better then its photos and write-up. As for the practical matters, Tonia was so easy to work with and very responsive. She provides lots of information about what to do, best places to eat, shop, etc. ahead of time and kindly and quickly answered some additional questions we thought of. The house was immaculate and the linens were of excellent quality. Nothing was missing. And our refundable security deposit check was waiting for us when we got home.

Absoutely Wonderful

5 of 5
Our visit was absolutely wonderful! The location was very serene and romantic. Easy access to the ocean. Entrance to Cape Breton National Park just down the road. Jewel By The Sea felt like home the minute we walked in the door and plopped down our things and put our feet up out on the deck facing the ocean. Huge windows fill the rooms with sunlight and the view of the ocean is positively stunning. We cooked several meals in the well-stocked kitchen, spent hours in the living room, reading, engaging in intimate conversations and soaking in the spectacular views. On several mornings we sat on the back porch and watched a group of seals playing and soaking up the sun just offshore, watched Eagles soar thru the skies. We even had a Bull Moose stop by for a visit one evening. Tremendous! The location of the house is rural -- There is a large grocery store about an hour and half away or stop at the coop in Baddeck (about 30-45 minutes) before you arrive because restaurant offerings are scarce. -- but if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this is the place to go. Also, spend $25 for a book of ferry tickets. Trust me, you'll save a lot of money doing so. House is exactly as pictured and is well stocked, only thing you need is your clothes and groceries....everything else is provided. Great kitchen. Beautiful views from everywhere in the house. We are all in love with Cape Breton, but I am sure that we don't have to tell you that. Although this was our first trip to Nova Scotia, it will not be our last. Thank you for letting us share your home, we truely enjoyed our 2 weeks there and hope to return soon.
