Breath taking

5 of 5
I'm originally from the Belle Cote area, so when the opportunity came to be, to drag a few of my city friends to the country, this was the place that we made our home. It was our home for only a week, but a million memories were made, and I'm sure 80% of them were on the screened in porch over looking the stunning Margaree river. The screened in porch had a mind of it's own and pulled us in day and night, all day for some of us. The magical feel of sitting in a rocking chair with a coffee/drink/beer in hand was serene, you would never leave this place and say you weren't relax, that would be impossible. Each night a beautiful meal was prepared in the old country kitchen, and of course the bbq which is placed out back right by the door, making it easy to get to get your food to and from. The rooms were comfortable and clean, almost each couple had their own bathroom. Although I will admit, besides being in bed, I was rarely in the house. Now this was my first visit to this house back in 2013. In 2014 I came back and brought along my family members from the US. This was no longer a week long get away with adults only, now we had kids to consider. This house is perfectly build for a family with kids. The large kitchen separates you from the deck and the living room that has the TV. Not only can the adults sit down and have a nice quiet evening, you literally can not hear the children, playing their games or watching movie. And if you want to kick the kids out of the house and get fresh air, it has huge outdoor space and the house is set back from the road, so there is no worries of cars, when a car arrives you have plenty of time to see it and move out of the way. If you love nature this is a great location, from morning to night something was happening, from the bald eagle flying by and perching on it's tree, watching the fish jump, to animals coming out to the sandbar in the middle of the river. One day we watch a man walk out of the water onto the sandbar from the other side of the river, you can see the kayaks and boaters go by. All the amenities in the house are perfect we didn't need for anything. There was never a water issue, so showering was never an issue even though at any given time there was the max amount of people in the house. This place is perfect for anyone with a large family, or someone just wanting to bring friends to beautiful CB.

A Very Special Cape Breton Home

5 of 5
Maggie’s is a charming and historical farmhouse located on the Cabot Trail near Cape Breton Highlands National Park. On arrival we were made to feel very comfortable and welcome by Uli and Cathy, quickly noting the warmth, cleanliness, and rustic beauty of the house and area. We particularly liked the wood-burning fireplace in the kitchen which heated the whole house and produced a cosy feeling throughout. But Maggie’s is also equipped with modern conveniences such as fast WiFi, a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and a coffee-maker. Throughout the house are books and magazines with both current and historical information about Maggie’s and the local area, not to mention period photographs on some of the walls. It is obvious that much care, good taste, and love were given to produce a special place for visitors to Cape Breton, a home away from home. We arrived at Maggie’s in mid-October during the highly popular Celtic Colours festival amidst brilliant autumn foliage and unseasonably warm temperatures, ideal for hiking as well as exploring the Cabot Trail. On a rare rainy afternoon, we drove to Baddeck and visited the Alexander Graham Bell museum which is highly recommended. Uli took us for a walk to a nearby beach area known as the gill with his friendly dog Tomo, and also provided information about other local walks/hikes from Maggie’s and along the Cabot Trail. Both he and Cathy are very knowledgeable about the area and obviously enjoy sharing information when asked. The local seafood was delicious, especially lobster rolls and various types of seafood chowder. It was late in the season, but we managed to have chowder at Neil’s Chowder House at Neil’s Harbour on the last day it was open. It was so good we bought two more portions to take away for another meal. Otherwise, there are grocery stores in Baddeck and Ingonish providing everything needed for home cooking. We are already looking forward to returning to Maggie’s and Cape Breton in future and are very appreciative of the helpfulness and generosity provided by Cathy and Uli.

An Awesome Week

5 of 5
We rented the Matheson house so our family could spend quality time together. Driving up the driveway and before entering the house we were already impressed by the yard and the view. Upon entering the house we were overwhelmed by the coziness and cleanliness. The three bedrooms were spacious and well maintained with snugly quilts and there was no shortage of fans for the warm nights. Everything you need to cook and bake like pots and pans and utensils is available. It was super great having a washer and dryer at our disposal too. We enjoyed swimming and fishing at all the local swimming spots. Little river beach was awesome and also Indian brook and barrachois river were fun. Simply Pizza and the Clucking Hen are two eateries down the street and they are both a must try. The owner was very accommodating and quick to reply to all of our inquiries. We hope to make this an annual family event. Overall it exceeded our expectations.
