Picture perfect spot in peaceful Cape Breton!

                5 of 5
"Maggie's" is truly a unique home. We booked based on the lovely pictures online, but the actual place FAR exceeds what you see on screen. If you want real Cape Breton heritage, look no further. The house itself is full of character, while also fully outfitted with all the contemporary comforts you'd need (fast wifi, great washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc.) Each bedroom has its own sweet style, and the upstairs loft is great for late night lounging. The kitchen is wonderful for cooking in, although we spent most of our time using the BBQ.... We didn't know the lay of the land before arriving in Cape Breton, so we were happy to discover that Skirdu (where Maggie's is) is the less developed side of the Cabot Trail - fewer tourists, more of a local feel. We got to know some fishermen at the Little River docks (and enjoyed the local beach there), hiked local trails and went swimming in nearby ponds. Provisions are best picked up in Baddeck (or Ingonish), which are a bit of a drive, but Wreck Cove General Store - a quick jaunt up the road - often sufficed. Uli and Cathy (Cathy is a born and bred CB'er!) were amazing, excellent, exceedingly warm hosts. They went above and beyond in welcoming us to the island. An apple pie awaited us when we arrived, and Uli thoughtful arranged for some lobster since the season was ending just as we started our stay. He also introduced my husband and baby to some long hikes behind the house and was always available on the rare occasion when we needed to be in touch. We used Maggie's as a home base for exploring the Cabot Trail and Cape North during our three week stay, and were always so happy to return "home" each night. I'll never forget driving up to the house that first day as the sun started to set - it was like a picture in a children's book. Don't miss: the short hike to "the gill", Little River beach, Wreck Cove General Store, the Dancing Moose, the Clucking Hen, and further away - Warren Lake, the Coastal Trail, Cabot Landing beach, and all of Cape North....

                Charming, clean and well-maintained

                5 of 5
We rented the house for 1 week in August. We were 2 couples traveling to Cape Breton for the first time. The house was very charming, clean and comfortable. The kitchen was fully equipped to prepare meals. The owner’s Roger and Sandra were very helpful and generous throughout our stay. They greeted us with a bottle of wine and some homemade jam. The house is directly located off of Cabot Trail, a short walk to the beach and approximately an hour from to the Highlands Park. If you enjoy hiking their property offers several hours of great bush trails right out the back door. Roger suggested a ceilidh at a tea house near by. They happen twice a week. We attended one, it was fantastic Celtic music performed by local artists (fiddlers). Lobster season ended in July. We wanted fresh lobsters so we bought some from a local restaurant in Baddeck. If you are driving to Cape Breton, we recommend bringing a cooler and doing groceries before getting to Cape Breton. We did our groceries in Antigonish, it’s cheaper than in Cape Breton. We highly recommend this rental and would definitely go back!

                An Awesome Week

                5 of 5
We rented the Matheson house so our family could spend quality time together. Driving up the driveway and before entering the house we were already impressed by the yard and the view. Upon entering the house we were overwhelmed by the coziness and cleanliness. The three bedrooms were spacious and well maintained with snugly quilts and there was no shortage of fans for the warm nights. Everything you need to cook and bake like pots and pans and utensils is available. It was super great having a washer and dryer at our disposal too. We enjoyed swimming and fishing at all the local swimming spots. Little river beach was awesome and also Indian brook and barrachois river were fun. Simply Pizza and the Clucking Hen are two eateries down the street and they are both a must try. The owner was very accommodating and quick to reply to all of our inquiries. We hope to make this an annual family event. Overall it exceeded our expectations.
