THE PERFECT SPOT TO GET ENGAGED

        5 of 5
My boyfriend and I stayed in this cottage for the weekend, and had the most lovely getaway we've ever had. Inverness is a beautiful area, with beautiful beaches, amazing local music and little restaurants. The house itself was just wonderful - full of thoughtful details and amenities, like mountain bikes for our use, a garden with fresh vegetables, a very well equipped kitchen with a sound system, and an amazing view of the ocean. We didn't even need the car to enjoy the scenery We could just jump on the bikes and ride up the coast line on a dirt road, enjoying many views of the cliffs and ocean. It was spectacular! We got engaged over the weekend, and it felt like a perfect, magical spot. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

        MATHESON HOUSE IS A GEM!

        5 of 5
The owner's description of the home and property were accurate. If anything, we found that the real-life experience exceeded our expectations based on this web site. For example, the kitchen is spacious, and is very well supplied. The house was clean when we arrived. We appreciated the good-quality linens and enjoyed the nice touches such as quilts and charming decor. We enjoyed the mowed loop through the property and the mowed trail up the hill to the mountain. It's obvious that there is pride of home ownership, and that the owner cares about stewardship of the land. Getting to the waterfront can be an interesting challenge, but certainly worth the effort. We walked the spit between the pond and the bay while the tides were changing. The owner provides clear, pleasant and fast communications. We experienced one home maintenance issue, and the owner dealt with it pronto as soon as we alerted him. Clearly we would recommend Matheson Farmhouse to others. The location on the Cabot Trail was ideal for us. It's about 30 minutes to the National Park entrance, and about the same distance to both Sydney and Baddeck. We had a number of park favorites. Trails: Middlehead, Le Buttereau, MacIntosh Brook, Mary Ann Falls and Green Cove. Beaches: Black Brook, Ingonish, Le Bloc. Nearby fishing harbours (take a camera): Little River, Neil's Harbour, Margaree, Cheticamp. As well, we recommend these activities: The Bird Island Boat Tour in Big Bras D'Or (better than Donelda's and worth the drive), Louisbourg Fortress, the Miner's Museum in Glace Bay (be sure to take the underground tour!), the Bell Museum in Baddeck. Our favorite artisans were the Pewter Store next door and Arts North, up in Cape North. The Clucking Hen, just a few minutes up the road, is an excellent restaurant. For groceries, you can shop at the Co-op in Baddeck. We saved by stopping at Port Hawkesbury's Great Atlantic and WalMart on the way in, and put the perishables in a cooler. You will want to get used to the Englishtown Ferry as a shortcut. Be sure to buy a 10-trip pass for $13.50 instead of $5.50 per trip. You can buy the pass onboard. We had a fabulous trip and came home happy!

OUR "SECRET" PARADISE ON CAPE BRETON

        5 of 5
"In the Gloaming" was a wonderful find, even in the "off season" - we were here for the first 19 days of November and we couldn't have been more pleased. Not only was the house more than comfortable for we three adults but we met such wonderful people who accepted us as part of their community - probably because Marian, the housekeeper, told everybody to make us welcome!! Tom, the mussel man, was more than generous with mussels and one of our number had no trouble catching enough mackerel to feed us as well of many of the local community. Everything: house, people, scenery, weather treated us wonderfully. We found the location of the farmhouse perfect, an artisits dream, as we were able to complete many watercolour paintings of the local scenery during our visit. Thanks to Frank, as owner and Marion as Housekeeper Barbara Willcocks Sunshine Coast, Australia
