Comfy & cozy home away from home

5 of 5
We traveled to Cape Breton Island for the Celtic Colours International Festival. We loved staying at Laverne & Gordon's lovely Riverside Cottage. It is a sweet, homey, comfortable cottage with a beautiful view out any of its many windows. We enjoyed watching the Harlequin ducks from the riverside room. We also spotted eagles during our stay. There was plenty of room for our party of four adults. It was so nice being close to Baddeck but also being out in the country where was very quiet and peaceful. Laverne and Gordon made us feel welcomed with a fire burning in the stove and a visit when we arrived. They wanted to make sure we were comfortable and that we had everything we needed. This part of God's creation is so beautiful. The fall colors were at their peak - breathtaking. Thank you Laverne and Gordon. We hope to return someday.

FIRST CLASS/WORLD CLASS...SUPERB

5 of 5
This place…this Kildare…is nestled in the quiet countryside of Baddeck Nova Scotia. My husband and I stayed here for a week this August, 2014. We have stayed at a number of hotels, resorts and rentals over the years and many of them have been absolutely fabulous. But the bar has just been raised on each and every detailed level when we discovered and stayed at Kildare. Meeting a renters needs is one thing but exceeding all expectations is another. The home and the water views of the Bras d’Or Lakes are staggeringly beautiful. The home, inside and out was meticulously clean and stocked with everything you could need…and then some and some more after that (an absolute first for me as I’m very fussy) ☺. Not to be too repetitive of former reviewers, but it must be noted that everything in the description is even better in real time. The owner is ultra-professional and her attention and follow-up to all of our queries made us feel quite confident we had selected the perfect place. What we had this week is a wonderfully cared-for, world-class, historical home that provided private and peaceful views of Bienn Bhreagh, on the Bras d’Or Lakes. There were no unexpected annoyances or disappointments. Kildare is dripping in all the charm and character that even the most discerning renter would be extremely pleased with. For us (it was only my husband & I), it was a much-needed break from our busy lives. And nursing a back injury, I was quite content to plant myself on the covered veranda, drinking cup after cup of tea for the entire week…just watching the water…just being. The peerless views from inside and out are truly magical. No one moniker can capture its essence or beauty. But it’s certainly made an impression on me. Simply put, Kildare is mystical, a place of peace, calm…a good place to heal. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your home. It has captivated us and we will want to come back, Thanks again, Terri & Graham.

Good view from barebones but functional cottage

4 of 5
My husband and I stayed in BayCroft Cottage for a week. The photos on VRBO are mostly accurate (Since they were taken, a hot tub replaced two of the Adirondack chairs on the deck. And the dining table we had seated 4.). The view of the water is good and as pictured. This cottage was plenty roomy for us. Sleep quality was excellent as the location is very quiet and the mattress on the larger bed is very good. The shower was nice, too. There is nothing fancy about this cottage at all. Everything is clean and functional, but totally low-end in terms of cost, e.g. Linoleum, countertops, refrigerator, microwave. In fact the microwave is so low-end that it is only 550 watts, which makes it only marginally useful. The one big deficit in this cottage is the lack of decent pots and pans and other kitchen supplies. There were two frying pans -- one very small and one that was truly wrecked and terminally greasy. Only two real mugs. No pot holders. Really, I rated this property as a "4" rather than a "5" based primarily on the furnishing of the kitchen. Beware if it is your intention to cook real meals in this kitchen. You should also know that the lake access at the bottom of the driveway (and across the road) does not include a dock. You simply have to scramble over some small boulders to get to the water.
