Peace, perfect peace.

The booking process was easy and the communication with Laverne was friendly and we had looked forward to staying in the riverside cottage and to meeting her and Gordon. We were not disappointed on both counts. The cottage is spacious, clean and well equipped. It is appropriately furnished for a place in the country, with lots of exposed wood and plenty of windows to look out onto the beautiful surroundings. The view from the main bed has to be seen to be believed, with a marvellous vista across the river towards the hills and no other dwellings in sight. You get a feeling of peace and tranquillity but you don’t feel totally isolated as there are neighbours not too far away and Laverne and Gordon have a B&B just a short distance away. This is the sort of place where people don’t lock their doors and is reminiscent of a simpler by-gone time where you can slow down, relax and appreciate the bounty of Nature. There are beavers in the river and bald eagles flying around and sitting in the trees. Canoeing down the river was a joy, as was sitting by the campfire afterwards and having a cold beer and listening to… well, nothing really – it’s a very rare thing these days to have silence. After dark, the stars were amazing too – no light pollution here. You’ll not be watching the TV and you might not have a phone signal or a Wi-Fi connection but none of that matters as you will have plenty to do just enjoying being there and watching the wildlife. If you can’t get them in the cottage, you can pick up Wi-Fi and phone signal in Baddeck, which is just a few minutes’ drive away, if you need to occasionally reconnect with the modern world. We managed to get a signal on the radio with a couple of local stations and then sat by the woodstove and read under the lamplights. And if all of this doesn’t convince you, then there’s Laverne and Gordon, two of the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet – very warm and welcoming and on hand if you need anything. The cottage makes the perfect base to explore this beautiful area and don’t miss the Cabot Trail, especially in Autumn when it’s truly breathtaking.
