My Wife, my 11 year old daughter and I rented this condo for four days during Semana Santa in Mazatlan in 2008. We knew this would be busy week in Mazatlan and wanted a place that was away from the bustle of the Golden Zone but still convenient to restaurants and shopping.
The location of the Playa Escondida condos fit this bill perfectly. The beach out front was quiet and uncrowded even during the height of Semana Santa on Thursday and Friday afternoon but a short bus ride took us right into the Golden Zone. The condo itself was exactly as described and everything was in working order. It was also very nicely decorated.
My daughter got her own room and her own bathroom all for roughly half of what a beachfront resort hotel in Mazatlan would cost. The owners were a pleasure to deal with and the development itself provided a high level of service. We received daily maid service, free beer delivery and very reasonable laundry service. The courtyard was pretty and well maintained and the pool was clean with warm water. There is also a tennis court but none of us play.
If you are considering Mazatlan I would recommend renting this unit or one of the many other condos available in the area just north of El Cid Marina over a hotel. There are many condo developments here and many more being built. In general the area is newer and cleaner than the Golden Zone with access to a nice beach that can be walked for miles. If you want a little more action the taxi or bus ride to the heart of the Golden Zone with its busy beaches and wealth of good inexpensive restaurants takes five minutes.
This particular unit is usually booked well in advance. We were lucky to get it because of the early Easter this year, but there are other units in the same complex and neighbouring complexes available although usually for a little more money. Mazatlan is a great travel bargain and hopefully will remain one even though it is now booming with new construction. I would stay here again and recommend it to others with no hesitation.
