Everything we had hoped for and more...

5 of 5
We absolutely loved our stay at Buttercup Haven. The home was exactly as described, but as always the pictures don't do it justice. The views were breath taking and the interior was full of surprises. All the directions were easy to follow and the property was immaculate when we arrived. In fact, after a 14 hour drive, getting settled and cooking our first meal in the well appointed kitchen was a breeze. I would definitely recommend this house if you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy all the offerings of Western NC. We chose Franklin because it seemed to be a perfect central location for all the activities we wanted to do for our getaway. There was so much to do within 45 minutes. Unfortunately our 7 night stay didn't seem long enough. We are a family of 4, with two kids 9 & 12 yrs old. Here are some of the places we recommend visiting (all less than an hour drive); Highlands Aerial Park for ziplining, Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for white water rafting, Tsali Recreational Area for mountain biking, Franklin Area visiting the various gem mines, a scenic drive to Highlands (stopping at all the waterfalls), picking up one of the many books at Buttercup Haven and visiting some other local waterfalls. And lastly, spend a day or two just sitting around the house, if time allows. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time back at Buttercup Haven, spoiling ourselves. ps. Don't forget to soak in the hot tub at night. Star gazing was great!

enjoyable week

4 of 5
Cabin is nice and clean and worked well for our group of four families. We had 13 people that included 4 children and a baby. Home included high chair and pack n play. We enjoyed the decks and the mountain view. The outside ceiling fans made the deck pleasant even on warmer days. The kids and adults enjoyed the hot tub. We saw a fox walk along the edge of the woods a few times. The Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the nearest locations to access mountain hiking trails and is less than 30 minutes away up Cove Creek Road. Some of the other places we visited included Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Bryson City, Asheville, and Clingman's Dome. Big Bear Rafting (highly recommended) is just up I-40 in Tennessee. The Walmart in Waynesville is not very far away for the essentials (such as hand soap) and it is worth the drive to eat at Bogart's Restaurant and Tavern. The kitchen itself is very nice with a five-burner gas cook top and two ovens. The cooking pots are in good shape. Unfortunately the kitchen also had a few downsides. Prior to booking I wrote to the owner and asked: "We plan to do a lot of cooking. Is the kitchen cookware in good working order? (We had a previous rental experience where there were plenty of pots and pans but they were rusty or flaking teflon and basically non-usable)." The owner wrote "The kitchen cookwear will exceed your expectations." The kitchen had two fry pans. One of them was stainless steel and had black gunk encrusted around the edge of the cooking surface. The other pan had flaking non-stick surface. I could not find a spatula or coffee grinder. I contacted the owner who responded: "I assume that someone took the spatula and has damaged the frying pan as well. We don't offer a coffee grinder. Just regular coffee pot and a Keurig. There is an electric frying pan that you can use that is new. Would you like me to have someone bring you a spatula?" The cookware did not meet our expectations. Using an electric skillet in an otherwise gourmet kitchen was not what I had in mind. I ended up buying a couple fry pans at Walmart. I suggest asking about this prior to booking if you intend to cook during your stay. Don't have space here to write much else (including more of the great things!), but I do want to mention that the bunk beds were squeaky and made it hard for some of the kids to fall asleep. Overall we loved the cabin and had a great week!

A Little Bit of Heaven

5 of 5
If you're looking for a vacation home that is quiet and secluded, yet has easy access to every place you would want to visit in the Asheville area, Mountain Laurel Lodge is the place for you. After spending three weeks there with different family members and friends joining my husband and me during the time, I can write with confidence that the home is clean and well-maintained, is comfortable for both children and adults, has everything you need in the kitchen, as well as throughout the home, has wonderful beds and linens, and is truly a delightful place to stay. The sparkling clean hot tub was a definite plus that was enjoyed by all of our group. We loved sitting on the porches for early morning coffee or visits in the evening. The children loved being able to play outside. One day they even made fairy houses and looked each morning to see if a fairy had come. White squirrels and a cottontail rabbit played along the edge of the woods. Among our favorite area activities were rafting the French Broad River with the French Broad Rafting Company, horseback riding at Cedar Creek Ranch, taking a trolley tour of Asheville, touring the Biltmore, and spending time in both Hendersonville and Flat Rock. Carl Sandburg's home and goat farm is definitely worth seeing and having barbecue at Hubba Hubbas is a good place for lunch afterwards. In fact, all of our restaurant meals were delicious. One thing we especially liked about the Hendersonville/Flat Rock area is that we didn't feel like tourists. All of the shops were authentic. There's a great children's play place on Main Street and Fired Up Ceramics was fun, too.. Another plus for this area are the wonderful locally grown food markets. Last, if you're a gardener like I am, do not miss Raymond's Nursery in Hendersonville...outstanding,...80% of the plants are propagated there. Our visit was one where tons of memories were made. We would love to come again and would definitely choose Mountain Laurel Lodge as our home away from home. Dianne Mapp, June 17, 2014
