We first met Ruby and Elmer in 2009 when we came to Asheville and rented another property in the area. Stoneybrook was actually our first choice but the lovely cottage was reserved for the weeks we wanted in the Fall of 2009. When we arrived, the other property was - for lack of a better word - a disaster. We ended up in a hotel. While there, we called and spoke to Ruby. She said Stoneybrook was rented, but gave us the address so we could drive by and keep it in mind for the future. We made reservations twice in 2010 but had to postpone both times. Ruby and Elmer were wonderful about both cancellations.
In 2012 our family suffered a tragedy in the sudden loss of our beloved Son. We could not see very far into the future. This year we decided to try a take a few steps forward and come back to Asheville. We knew we wanted to stay at Stoneybrook. The cottage is much more than a "house". Ruby and Elmer have made it a home to us - though we'd never set foot on the property. They are both so warm and friendly and put their hearts into every part of Stoneybrook.
The cottage sits in an idyllic spot. The National Forest is directly behind the cottage with a path leading into the woods. You can hear the brook from the cottage. At night you can actually see the stars! Not only from the great zero gravity lounge chairs outside - but also from the skylights and large windows inside. The cottage is equipped with everything that you need to make your stay perfect. Ruby decorated the cottage for Autumn and it was simply beautiful. There are even live plants inside the cottage and resident Cardinals who come sit on the window ledges! The pavilion - with its fireplace - is amazing. Elmer had all the wood and kindling stacked neatly. We built many fires and sat out for hours enjoying the lovely glow.
Meeting Ruby and Elmer was such a rewarding experience. Elmer stopped by one afternoon when he saw us outside. He played a song on his Mandolin in memory of our Son. We will never forget how beautiful it was - as though the Heaven's sent a Christmas lullaby down through the forest, just for us.
We are returning for Christmas. Ruby and Elmer decorate for every season - so when we return, Stoneybrook will be decorated for Christmas. This will be the first Christmas tree we have had since before our Son died. Stoneybrook is gently helping us on our grief journey to discover what our new normal is. With love and gratitude -JWJ
