A cosy niche in the mountains

4 of 5
We loved the cabin and the location by the stream. The log fire was a huge plus as it was very cold when we arrived. The cabin had all the bedding you could possibly need and an ample supply of towels and linens. My only complaint was that the 2 basement bedrooms were extremely cold, even though there were portable heaters. The rest of the cabin was very cosy . We enjoyed a wonderful home cooked Thanksgiving meal at a small restaurant in Burnsville called the Regal Beagle. We also had terrific hot sandwiches and the best pumpkin bread ever from Ye Old country Amish store in Burnsville. Great places to visit were Roan mountain. (tons of snow). Another highlight of the cabin were the wild deer in the woods around the property. Definitely would recommend but if you sleep in the basement bedrooms bundle up.

Change of pace

4 of 5
The owners were very friendly and helpful. It was interesting to learn about the power sources to the house and see the power consumption. There is no internet access which is great for change of pace, but makes planning where to go challenging if it has not been planned in advance. The owners did provide brochures and information of the surrounding area which was useful. We had beautiful hikes at Mt Mitchell and on the South Toe River. We tried hiking the owners’ suggested trail (not on their land) and came upon a hunter’s fresh corn/apple pile. I would not suggest going up there during hunting season. The house is secluded and sits on beautiful property with wonderful views of the mountains. The listing description was accurate, however, the house was not as clean as I would have expected, especially since there is a cleaning fee associated with the reservation. Overall, it was a wonderful weekend! Thanks for sharing your house!

Home Away From Home

5 of 5
We lost our home to a fire January 23rd of this year (2014). Our home was one driveway above the Happy Apple Retreat. During our state of shock at losing all our material things, we contacted the owners of the Happy Apple to see if we could stay in their farmhouse until we could get back into a home of our home. When you basically have nothing but the clothes on your back, it is a blessing to walk into a home where that is actually all you need. The owners told us to go to the house immediately and they would have someone there as soon as possible to turn on the water and the phone. (The house had been winterized, and with no guests for the winter, the phone service had been disconnected...but the heat was on, and in zero degree weather, it was a welcomed surprise.) The owners have graciously let us stay in their farmhouse until our new home is ready for us to move into. We should be leaving this cozy, wonderful, home away from home, by the end of July so someone else can experience the charm and unique character of this one-of-a-kind house. As to the owners, they will always have a special place in our hearts.
