Great house on the lake!

4 of 5
We loved the view out the back window. The back porch was a great place to relax and listen to the water. This cottage is like stepping back in time, in a good way. We really enjoyed our stay. We had a group of 4 girls and were very comfortable in the space. Pumpkin Hill bistro was a top notch dinner destination a few miles down the road.

Perfect for a quiet, relaxing getaway

5 of 5
My husband and I rented Melissa and Peter's cabin for five nights over Labor Day weekend. Peter was pleasant to deal with, giving lots of good recommendations for the area. All the financials were very straight forward. We arrived and were pleased to see that the property is exactly as the photos show. It was clean, well maintained and the perfect getaway spot for us to unplug. The kitchen was well equipped with pots, pans and utensils - we made breakfast there every morning and grilled dinner 4 out of the 5 nights we were there (stop at the Wegmans in Ithaca or Corning on your way in). We fell into a wonderful routine of hiking in the morning, visiting wineries in the afternoon, then coming back to the cabin to relax in the evening. Even though we didn't have a boat during our stay, the dock was a real highlight and where we spent most of our time. Bring some popup chairs to put out on the end of the dock (or just let your feet dangle over the edge) and watch the sunset. Despite the fact that we were there Labor Day weekend, the lake and the neighborhood was very quiet. After dinner we'd head back down to the water to make a camp fire in the small fire pit. Bring your Boy Scout skills and your s'mores ingredients! You also might want to bring a flashlight if you're going to be navigating the 63 stairs up and down to the water at night. The cabin has wifi, but no cable TV. The day it rained, we played Scrabble - a real board game! The water is well water, so make sure to bring bottled water to drink. The hot water came quickly for showers and doing dishes (no dishwasher!). The grill is looking a bit used, so you might want to bring foil to grill on if you're a clean-freak. Note that you need to bring your own linens, but there was a blanket in the closet for when it gets chilly at night. This was our first time renting a property like this and we're hooked. It's nothing like staying in a hotel, but also not like being home. For some reason, the drudgery of making breakfast and doing dishes didn't seem so bad tucked back in the woods. Note that the cabin is about a mile down a gravel road (stop by Silver Thread Winery!), but we had no problem navigating, even the day it rained. It was very quiet and dark and peaceful. The location is also perfect, about 30 minutes north of Watkins Glen. We're hooked and will be back!

We had a really nice time at this little cottage. If you are looking for peace and quiet, you've come to the right place. It was not what I would consider to be luxurious, but it was a very nice lake cottage. There were just two of us and our dog, but there was ample room for two couples. The deck outside is great for watching sunsets and cooking out. I would not recommend small children here though, due to the stairs leading to the beach front, which is 2 full sets of steep stairs down. We spent a lot of time at the wineries and visited several local restaurants. There is a Wegmans about 10 mins away as well, so everything you would need is very close. You literally drive through a corn field to get to the place, so when I say it's quiet, it's definitely quiet. We will definitely be back to Seneca Lake - we had a great time there!
