We have been visiting the North Fork since our children were quite small, and we just stayed in Peconic’s Sound Dunes Cottage. What a pristine, natural, and special place -- rare to find, now that parts are beginning to feel rather more suburban. This “private and stylish waterfront cottage” is a real beauty – renovated, modern, simply, but tastefully and comfortably designed, fitting right in with its exquisite location -- from the shingles on the cottage to the shells on the deck. Gloriously high ceilings, vaulted and beamed! How peaceful to lounge on the cottage’s deck with a morning coffee, or watch the sunset over a glass of wine. You can overlook the dunes with not another house in sight. It’s all about space, light, and nature, with mesmerizing views onto the Sound and Sky -- the colors ever changing, even in a late Spring.
We discovered a small (salt) marsh with plenty of birds not far from the cottage. During our short stay (and, we reckon, our 8th trip to the North Fork), we enjoyed walking and birding along the beach; fishing on the jetty near Goldsmith’s Inlet; golfing at Cedars; pottering around Greenport; finding New Suffolk; eating at the newly re-opened Pepi’s; and visiting Horton Point and favorite haunts in Love Lane. Everything is so close (farmland, vineyards, beautiful stony beaches), yet you wouldn’t know you were just 90 miles from New York.
The rental process was very easy. Friendly and relaxed, the owners are an absolute pleasure to know. They made us feel right at home, even before we arrived. We highly recommend Sound Dunes Cottage and are sure you will love it as much as we did -- in whatever season you may travel. Thank you, Neil and Sharon, and we look forward to a return trip!
