A well-priced, well-appointed stay in NYC

4 of 5
My first time in NYC with my mom and aunt, with this unit we each got to have a bedroom all to ourselves and didn't have to share one bathroom. Since my aunt has bad knees the fact that she could stay right on the first floor was a major plus for her. The kitchen is definitely quite nice with a stainless steel fridge, microwave, dishwasher, etc.The lower bathroom was surprisingly large, and seemed wheelchair friendly should you need it. Tae was also quite responsive to anything we needed. Don't let the fact that it's in Harlem scared you- it's not like what you've seen in the movies. I never felt unsafe. It's predominantly black and that's about it. Subway is about a 6 minute walk too That having been said, I do have a few complaints. The 2 upstairs bedrooms have to share a bathroom that's half the size of the bathroom that only has to be used by 1 bedroom. Seems a bit ass-backward. There's also no ventilation so it gets warm quite fast. Speaking of warm, it would also run out of hot water within 10-15 minutes, though the sink would still give piping hot water? Didn't make much sense. Because there are wood floors, any sounds made by the unit above us REEEEALLLLYYYYY carry. Was woken up by what sounded like jogging triceratops dropping bowling balls on the floor. The street-facing bedroom in the upper bedroom only has a razor-thin curtain over the window that is very easy to see through and made my mother a little uncomfortable. Why weren't blinds put on the windows? All in all it still fit our needs and if I was travelling in the same situation again I would likely stay here again, and hope that Tae would read this and make a few improvements. He seems like someone who would care enough to implement them.

So nice!

My daughter and I stayed in Kakuna's apt for 3 nights and would (and hopefully will) return for a longer stay. Everything was just right. The apt. is clean and spacious. The bathroom was big and the water pressure good. I was pleased to know that Kakuna and her family also live in the building because I knew that meant the premisis would be well cared for. From the start, we felt like we were in good hands. Kakuna responded quickly to my inquiries and send a lot of well organized material - everything we needed to know for our stay like the wifi passwords, the recycling schedule- and a list of supermarkets, information on how to get to the apt from each airport etc. In addition, she have us some great restaurant recommendations in the neighborhood. We felt right at home and well taken care of. We were surprised and delighted to learn that Kakuna was even bringing us breakfast supplies - eggs, milk, bread, cereal, coffee, tea, cottage cheese etc. We hardly needed at get groceries at all. We felt very comfortable in the neighborhood as well. Although it may appear far from downtown Manhattan on a map, the express train stops nearby and it's just a short ride. The beds are both comfortable and, best of all, it was quiet at night! No sirens, trucks, people shouting. You could hear the fridge humming, it was so peaceful. Thanks so much for everything, Kakuna!!!

Wonderful Experience

5 of 5
This place is the real deal. Upscale enough to be suitable for anyone, but in a real New York neighbourhood. We took the subway uptown to see the sights, which were great, and couldn't wait to get back to Harlem. Soho and The Village are just full of tourists and retailers. Harlem is still genuine. Local flavour, great restaurants, (recommended by Michael), and just a nice vibe. If I lived in Manhattan, this is where it would be. Would highly recommend.
