Charming, Dog-Friendly Couples Getaway

5 of 5
My boyfriend and I were looking for an affordable escape from Brooklyn somewhere near the Catskills when we came across the listing for Lazy Brook Farm. Having two dogs and a modest budget, this property seemed ideal. It was only upon arrival that we realized how little justice the pictures and description of the property do it! The house is beyond charming and has a modern cabin feel. It smells like pine, and at night you fall asleep to the very audible stream (perhaps the feature I loved most). The kitchen is well stocked and has most any utensil you would need to cook or grill--which we did every night after visiting the awesome farm stand a few miles away. (Go there. They have meat whose name they knew, wild-foraged mushrooms, eggs with feathers still on them, etc.) I mention this because of the home's close proximity to awesome food, beautiful swimming holes, and the trailhead to one of the best hikes in the Catskills. Lastly on the house, the fire pit area is fantastic and is a great place to lounge day or night (and WiFi works out there if you need). I find it very worth noting that Jason, the property manager, is a totally awesome guy. He was so helpful during our planning (traveling with two pit bulls can be tricky, and people can be very biased--but not Jason, who even brought his dog by in case they wanted to play). Also, he was always available by phone, gave us good tips as to hikes, restaurants and online resources, AND even came by the property one morning to drop off hiking poles for me to borrow when I realized I left mine at home! Nicest guy ever. We cannot wait to go back.

Excellent escape

My husband and I rented this house for a mini honeymoon right after our wedding. We were looking for someplace quiet and relaxing and found exactly that! The owners were excellent and responsive to emails and the house is spotlessly clean! The kitchen had everything you may need and we enjoyed a lot of meals there. Unfortunately we had a rainy week and missed out on using the outdoor patio and grill as much as we would have liked, but the indoor fireplace was put to good use. We had deer pass through the backyard and had a clear night of stargazing and saw the most amazing meteor! The house is in a great location - secluded but with neighbors down the road, also close to many of the areas we were familiar with from weekend trips (and close to grocery shopping in Margaretville). We spent a day at the Emerson Spa, dinner at Peekamoose, explored Delhi (excellent lunch at Blue Bee Café), took a ride on the Arkville train, visited the Pakatakan Farmers market and headed over to the Windham area for horseback riding (Rough Riders Ranch). This was our first week long vacation in 10 years and I think we are both convinced to do it more often! We cannot wait to return, hopefully soon!
