WONDERFUL WEEK AT SUNNYHILL!

5 of 5
I took a getaway week at Sunnyhill hoping to work undistracted on my music, bike the Catskill Scenic Trail, and liberate myself from some of the frenetic, dehumanizing routes of "civilized life." Sunnyhill was the perfect choice for meeting these goals, a wonderful tonic for body and soul! 1. The sturdy a-frame is clean, organized, and comfortable. The carpet is brand new and a treat for the feet! 2. The beautiful setting is exquisitely private. I often had the sensation of being in the only campsite in an exclusive campground. 3. At the bottom of Decker Rd. is a pasture with almost twenty gorgeous miniature ponies. At the other end of Decker, there are dozens of magnificent long-horned cattle. Patrolling the house itself was a family of wild turkeys, two males and fourteen chicks! 4. I biked the Catskill Scenic Trail four times; especially enjoyable was pedalling down the center of acres of tall corn heading south from South Kortright. 5. A personal hero, the nature essayist John Burroughs, grew up on a farm in nearby Roxbury. His gravesite appropriately oversees the scenic fams and hillsides he and his family stewarded. 6. No internet! No emails! No fear-mongering by media bullies! 7. George is a great host and a fine fellow. I hope to enjoy his hospitality again and again!

ADORABLE HERB COTTAGE

5 of 5
My partner and I came up for a four-day weekend with our dog and had a wonderful time. We have stayed at numerous places in the Woodstock/Phoenicia/Saugerties area over the years both remote and close to town, and this is our favorite. The cottage is exactly as presented in the photos--clean and quiet with plenty of room to spread out. The owners have thought of everything people would need to make their stay pleasant and relaxing--there are fluffy towels, an extremely comfortable mattress with plenty of bedding for chilly mountain nights, a fan for the occasional warm summer night, husbands to prop yourself up while reading, an old-fashioned tub for a soak, swivel chairs so you can face or not face the television depending on your mood and activity of choice, numerous table and floor lamps for nigh time reading, and plenty of dishes if you choose to cook or grill during your stay. We also enjoyed the video and DVD library as well as the collection of board games. The book of instructions regarding how to access the WiFi, operate the wood stove and the gas grill, use the various cable and TV remotes, and dispose of recyclables and garbage was both comprehensive and crystal clear. All of our needs and questions were anticipated and addressed. The house is half a mile from Main Street in Woodstock, so you can either walk or drive. The agent met us at the house upon our arrival and gave us excellent tips regarding where to eat out and where to get groceries. We will definitely go back!

CABIN IN THE WOODS BY BUS FROM NYC

5 of 5
tl;dr - if you want a cabin in the woods this place is pretty much perfect. Well-priced, accessible by public transport and a beautiful escape. Don't bother searching for 5 hours for other places, just book this one. The other reviews here summarize the cabin very well - read them instead for general reviews. We'll talk about our situation - no car, public transport to and from NYC for a 1 week stay in peak summer So we booked for 7 days, which meant taking enough food in backpacks for the entire stay for 2 people. This was possible with 2 packs at 15kg each, and we had 1 day spare food. We did not bring water - the listing says to bring your own water, but the owners have since installed a water well. The water is potable (drinkable) but has a natural sulfur smell/taste when it first comes out. If you leave the water in a container with the top off, the sulfur will go away in about 4-5hrs, faster if left in the sun. We drank the water all week, no problems at all, tasted great (after the sulfur evaporated out). We caught the Trailways bus from NYC Port Authority to Saugerties. Buses run regularly, takes about 3hrs, $60 return. From the Saugerties bus stop at the Sunoco Station on Rt 32, we caught a Saugerties Stagecoach Taxi for $12 to the cabin. If you run out of anything, there is a small store about 40mins walk from the cabin at the corner of W Saugerties Rd and Blue Mountain Rd. They are open until 6pm every day, and have some tinned food, pasta, ice cream, possibly fruit and veg. We never ran out of things to do during the week - sitting, talking, reading, walking, swimming, cooking, campfires, canoeing. However, if the quiet nature experience is not enough, you'll have to make your own fun. So no car = no problem. some random thoughts: - swimming in the lake is awesome - the inside of the hut is very small. It's enough for cooking, eating, hanging out for up to 3 or 4 people but cramped. But if you're coming here, you'll be loving it outside and hardly inside anyway! - When you look it up on a map, the cabin does not seem very isolated. But when you are there at the cabin you cannot see anyone else and it really feels like you have your own patch of forest. - we saw an abundance of wildlife constantly. If you keep still and keep your eyes open here you will not be disappointed!
