We stayed at "Nxai's Place" for a month and loved it. The guesthouse is very spacious, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. It even has a great selection of books and magazines, and it was great luxuriating at "home". The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and you can enjoy listening to a wind chime and the rustling leaves of birch trees, admire hummingbirds at work, and play with the family's friendly German shepherd. The property owner and extended family in a nearby house were delightful and responsive when needed, but unintrusive and respectful of guests' privacy. Lamy is a very quiet, safe community of only 125 residents, and you can take leisurely walks in the neighborhood and up the mesa behind the house. The only commercial places in town are the Amtrak Station and a Railroad Museum across the street which deserves a visit. Eldorado is a 10-minute drive away. It has a sizable supermarket, several restaurants, a small fitness center, an independent coffee shop, and other boutiques; there's even a small farmer's market held there every other week. Santa Fe is a 20-minute drive away, and it has many cultural offerings in the summer--music galore (opera, chamber music, choral), several independent film theaters, folk arts, history and art museums, etc. Sunsets and cloud formations in the area can be spectacular and dramatic. There are great places to hike nearby. It was hard for us to leave when our month-long stay was up in early August.
