Stylish Retreat in a Great Location

5 of 5
A very grown up house, full of space and style and with a unique history and stunning ocean views. Six of us stayed for just over a week, four adults and 2 children (3 & 11 years), spread over three bedrooms and four floors. Our hosts, John and Chip (plus Henry the extremely loyal dog), were always available and couldn't have been more attentive from the point of our initial enquiries, to our arrival and ultimately our departure. They offered endless help, be it local information, arranging drivers/cars, booking restaurants or just making sure we were OK! The town's brimful of history and character, vibrant with life until well into the night, and every footstep's a photographer’s dream. Pretty much everything you might want is within walking distance - shops, market, beach, bars, restaurants, water sports. We had a fantastic time mainly strolling and exploring the town, wandering to the beach and unintentionally eating out every day. Two of the best eating experiences of all time were had at completely contrasting eateries - local restaurant One Up and at La Fromagerie in Meskala. Be warned, the temperature's at least 5 degrees hotter and with very little breeze just a little inland. Our intention was to cook with some of the bountiful fresh market produce but, with holiday mode kicking in and prices so very reasonable, we never quite got round to it. The facilities are definitely available at the house though and there’s a special sense of cosy with the sound of the sea all about you, night and day. There’s plenty of sunshine but it’s not really a sunbathing destination, if that’s what you’re looking for. You’re more likely to get whipped by the wind or get a full body exfoliation by natural sandblasting if you’re on the beach but there’s plenty of places to relax, catch the daily rays and take in the array of sights and sounds about you. Essaouira is a wonderful assault on all the senses (but on a practical note, the house and the town aren’t ideal if you have mobility issues). Watch out for the constant potholes and uneven and ancient walkways, be ready to be jostled and to bargain. And when you’re done, step into the instant peace of Dar Evening Star. Special house, special place.
