My parents, husband, toddler and I had the pleasure of spending one week at Roo and Larry's impeccably maintained guest home in late August. As native Michiganders who love the Leelanau Peninsula, in the past five years we've rented several vacation properties in the area. Brook Song is the one we'll return to. The location makes Brook Song an excellent base for exploring all the area has to offer. It's less than a half hour's drive to Traverse City, less than ten minutes to Glen Arbor, a quick drive to Empire's beautiful beaches and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The cottage itself is situated on a beautiful piece of land, surrounded by lush gardens, behind which are woods threaded through with trails. In addition to the exuberant flowers, Roo maintains a large organic vegetable garden a stone's throw from the cottage. She encourages guests to pick and eat from the garden; filing bowls full of green and purple beans and rainbow chard to eat with dinner, I felt like a kid in a candy store. The cottage itself is clean, pretty, and bright. The interior is fresh and new looking. It's very well stocked, with plenty of towels and sheets, a complete kitchen with high quality appliances, and even a washing machine and dryer. Roo and Larry are exceptionally nice hosts, friendly, highly organized, and unobtrusive. Roo is a crackerjack baker as evidenced by the plate of cookies that greets guests upon their arrival. I would unreservedly recommend Brook Song to a friend or relative. It is an exceptional value -- a real slice of paradise -- and we can't wait to go back.
