Surprisingly magical spot for a frozen over, family-ski-vacation that wasn't

5 of 5
Our family (2 adults, 6yo, 10yo, and 2 13yo's) chose this location for its size, value, dog-friendliness, opportunity for teens to have own space, and proximity to ski resorts and water park, where we had expected to spend most of our time. Well -- turns out it went to 20 below zero, coldest snap weekend of the season, so too cold to ski, and water park literally broke down. Massive icicles encased the house, going down from roof and up from ground. It looked more like an arctic outpost, flag and all. We skipped all our planned activities, and mostly hunkered down here. So the cottage had to be all-things for our vacation. We laid out on the frozen lake at night, enjoying the perfect quiet and looking at the stars, went sledding around the house, watched snowmobilers during day and lots of movies. In the end, we all loved it! Especially the kids. Mark was great, extremely responsive when we called him to get plowed out, and to point out the sleds, there was even beer in the fridge. Don't expect fancy accommodations, but do expect to have what you need to enjoy time away with your family, even dog. There's a kind of simple magic here. There's no car traffic either, at least not in the winter, and our pup loved the rare freedom to run up and down the lane. A note to consider -- The cottage packs a lot into a small footprint -- with a very cozy common area (think 1 BR condo size DR/LV/KIT), and then an unusually generous 3 BRs. We were glad we didn't invite another family (which the cottage technically accommodates, and we were thinking of doing) because it would have been really tight during the day, especially at dinner time. We joked that it was a bed-for-10 and chairs-for-4 cottage :). It certainly wouldn't have been too bad if it were summer, as there's a big picnic table and plenty of room out there with the grill. But for us, all of that was encased in about 2 feet of snow :). Thanks again, Mark! Kids are asking about when we'll be going back :)

Great location, Very clean

5 of 5
3 families for a total of 12 adults stayed in this house during the New Years Day week. We all ski making this home a great location. Very close to the mountain for skiing. We chose to drive and park in the parking lot at the base of the mountain but you could easily walk. We had 12 adults and although there were enough beds, it was a little tight. It would be great for families with younger children. The house was very clean, beds were very comfortable. If you want to save some money and cook some meals at home it was easy. All of the things you needed to prepare your meals were available . The working grill was an unexpected bonus. The owners were GREAT to work with. Highly recommend this house if you are going to Crystal Mountain. We look forward to staying here again.

BEAUTIFUL AND FUN IN EVERY SEASON

5 of 5
This was our third visit to The Barn. We've gone in spring and fall and loved it and winter was full of different fun and activities. Our sons and grandchildren spent a few days ice fishing and caught many large Pike and Bass. The weather was sunny and nice for our week with a few lovely snow showers. One of the things we enjoy immensely is all the wild life we see there. On this visit we saw foxes crossing the frozen lake a few times a day. And one afternoon while removing a fish from a line two Eagles circled just 15 to 20 feet above our heads hoping to get an easy meal. And one of the funnier moments that occurred...I was watching the lake and drinking coffee when I watched a jeep drive across the lake. About 25 feet behind the jeep trotted a large dog and about 25 feet behind the dog trotted a fat sheep. I'm sure there's a good story here. There are so many indoor and outdoor activities at the house that we never have a bored moment. And the house itself is lovely and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with pans, utensils and all kinds of cooking equipment. This has become one of our favorite vacation spots and we already look forward to returning.
