Forest retreat

4 of 5
My wife and I just spent 4 nights at the Lakeside Cabins Resort. It is a gated community that is open during the day, and gated off at night. It is located about 1.5 hours from Chicago, though my wife and I kept remarking that we felt like we were in the Adirondacks or Seattle. The setting was perfect. We loved the grounds, the lake was great, and the cabin had a back deck that was right on the lake. The fishing was great! I caught a lot of sunfish/blue gill/crappie, but I saw a lot bigger fish in the lake - possibly muskie/walleye? The lake was beautiful, but the LED light/sprinkler was very tacky. We felt that the lake would be much more scenic and beautiful without the LED light/fountain in the center. My wife and I pretty much had the resort to ourselves, as we were there in mid-September, during the week. It was great. We enjoyed the community bonfire pit behind the community center for a couple of nights. It would have been a bonus if we were able to have a fire at our cabin, but this was just fine. We also used the community center to play ping pong, foosball, Pac-Man, and some pinball games. The grounds were amazingly clean and well-kept. But the cabin we stayed in was a bit of a problem. The carpeting was stained and dirty, the pillows were stained and gross (the management did bring us a couple of new pillows, but we ended up using the ones we brought with us), the blinds were broken/bent, the outside cushions on the chairs/benches were covered in mold and unusable, several lights were broken and/or missing a bulb altogether, and the main TV/stereo did not work. I guess it was a good thing that we didn't have cable, but I wanted to watch the football game (the one time I watched TV the entire trip), and I had to do it with my own mobile data - set up a hotspot onto my computer. Not a huge deal, but the management sent out the cable guy, which we had to deal with - and was one of the things we came to the woods/cabin to escape. The management was nice about the situation and ended up refunding a night's stay. So that was much appreciated. We enjoyed going to Union Pier/New Buffalo - only about 5-10 min away, and visited several wineries/breweries/distilleries (Round Barn and St. Julian) while in town. We really recommend you visit Jenn and St. Julian - she was great! We will definitely be back, hopefully sooner than later.

Great vacation house

5 of 5
We stayed here last year and decided to come back again this year. The outside deck, pool and screened in porch are great. The kids and adults loved the slide. All 14 of us were able to sit outside by the pool comfortably. The walk to the beach was only about 10 minutes. We went down there to see the sunset and well as to swim. Private and quiet location. Basement is a little damp but that didn't stop us from using it and sleeping down there.

Wonderful Family Vacation!

5 of 5
Our family - ranging in age from 2 years old to 86 years old - just spent a wonderful, relaxing week together at this beautiful home in its gorgeous setting. We were 7 adults and a two-year-old, and we had more than enough room to sleep comfortably, to hang out together, and to have individual quiet time to read and nap. The home is well-equipped and even has bath towels and washcloths that aren't paper thin! We cooked several large family meals together and had our choice of the large dining room or screen porch to eat in. The kitchen lends itself to people eating breakfast and lunch.at different times throughout the day. Our grandson had plenty of room to play in the kitchen and family room area. We even set up his play table and chairs in the kitchen. Great-grandma read and dozed on the screen porch each afternoon! We spent hours floating in the pool and soaking in the hot tub. The beach is just a block away with great sand for making sand castles. It is quite shallow which makes it manageable for kids and middle-aged adults. There are lots of things to do in the area. We did the winery, the train museum, shopping and lunch in St. Joe's. dinner at Redamaks, breakfast at a diner, the carousel and children's museum - well, you get the picture. The owner is great to work with and seems to really want others to enjoy his home. We highly recommend this terrific vacation spot!
