I felt so fortunate to have been able to stay here ! Marlene went out of her way to adjust her schedule so I could rent her cottage at the last minute. It was the perfect place for a retreat and renewal.... peaceful, relaxing, and visually stunning inside and out. The cottage and setting are breathtaking... The architecture allows for maximum enjoyment of the expansive views of the sandy beach, dunes, and Lake Michigan .. I could simultaneously watch the full moon set over the Lake and the sun rise in the East. The starry night sky and horizontal lightening displays on the water were all viewable from the master bedroom as well as from the living room and deck.
The furnishings and amenities are beautiful , comfortable, and thoughtful. Marlene has provided lots of resource material ( Birding books, binoculars, and a guide to the area Nature Preserves), a well equipped kitchen, a wonderful music system, quality linens, beautiful artwork, a comfy hammock overlooking the Lake, and everything needed for the beach. Her desire for all who stay here to have a memorable and special time is evident in all she has done, and continues to do for all of her renters. And we thank you !!
All types of sea birds grace the waters and beach in front of the cottage. A mature bald eagle soared past me on the deck (a first for me )...and one morning during coffee I witnessed a juvenile bald eagle perched on the neighbor's catwalk railing.
There is some beautiful hiking at the adjoining Wilderness nature preserve at the end of the road and accessible from Route 119. If you decide you want/need a dose of the city life, Petoskey is only a 25 minute ride away. I highly recommend the bookstore ( McLean and Eakin) , Grand Traverse Pie Company and the grocery store . Check out the Tunnel of Trees drive on Route 119, and make sure you enjoy a meal at Legs Inn in Cross Village ( request outdoor seating). A drive over the Mackinaw Bridge is well worth the panic attack that may ensue mid-crossing. When you make it across, check out Clyde's drive-in diner on Route 2... I hear the burgers are great. (Unfortunately, he was closed for maintenance the day I braved the trip).
Everything about my experience was terrific at this Cross Village cottage ...It just does not get any better than this !! and my dog was appreciative that he could come, too :)
