It's all about the front porch!

5 of 5
My wife and I have a close group of friends that we have been traveling with for the past 12 years. We have rented private homes from coast to coast in places like Tahoe, Jackson Hole, Telluride, and Whistler. We unanimously decided that this house was one of our favorites. A summer vacation in Oak Bluffs is all about the front porch and this home has a great one. It has plenty of space to line up the chairs along the front rail so everyone can kick back and relax during the hottest times of the day. But, it also has a large open area to the side with a comfortable outdoor dining table that is perfect for building a puzzle with your morning coffee or playing cards if it decides to rain. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are spacious with new and easy-opening windows to allow the breeze to flow through on a warm day (last season the windows of our rental were all painted shut). The kitchen is nicely laid out with a second full size refrigerator in an adjoining pantry space (a very welcome addition for large groups) and the indoor dining room comfortably seats 10 people. As much as we loved the house we were even happier with the location. You can see the beach from the front porch which is only a 2 minute walk away. You are also an easy 5 minute walk to either the ferry or downtown Oak Bluffs where you have many options for dining, shopping, supplies, or just a morning latte and bagel. The only downside is that our group is now second guessing our plans to go to Italy next summer instead of the Vineyard because we had such a great time. But that is a good thing isn't it?

Great location, however...

4 of 5
The home is in a perfect location. You really don't need a car since everything is a 2 -10 minute walk. The beach, bike paths, restaurants and shopping right at your doorstep! I thought the home could stand to be given a little TLC. The house was clean, the beds were clean & quite comfortable and there was ample room for the 5 in my party. The stairways have narrow treads & risers which may not be great for the elderly or small children. Small, inexpensive repairs or just attention to detail would dramatically improve the overall guest experience. Here are two examples, there is a wonderful glide rocker in the living room which squeaks very loudly every time you glide or rock. A $3.50 can of WD-40 could easily alleviate this issue. The noise created by the chair is annoying when you're trying to have a conversation or just watching a bit of television. If you like to cook or like to cook while on vacation, don't make any grand plans to do so while renting this home. The pots & pans and prep ware are not so good. Anyone who considered themselves a "real cook" would be very disappointed. I attempted to use a garlic press that looks like it was manufactured in the 1940's!! That didn't work out so well. Once again, a quick trip to TJMaxx or Marshalls for a decent set of pots, pans & cooking utensils, would have improved my guest experience. Despite these situations, I really enjoyed my vacation. It's really a wonderful house, I just wish the owners / care takers maximized the potential of such a lovely space in such a great location.

Lovely

4 of 5
We had a lovely time in Martha Vineyard and part of this was because the accommodation was so lovely. The condo was as described and very pleasant to stay in. While there are signs of wear and tear, I think you would expect that from a rental accommodation and it certainly didnt impact our stay. The condo has everything you would possibly need, including a washer and a dryer ( we were a family of 4 with an 18 months toddler travelling from abroad) and is super comfortable. The only thing that's missing is picnic stuff. We, for obvious reasons, couldn't bring that with us, and it would be nice to have a few tupperware boxed, cool box and maybe a few beach toys...but this is a mother talking! It is really well situated, we didn't have a car and just hired bikes and while we didn't the whole island, we had plenty of stuff to see and do to keep us busy. We went to Oak Bluffs and Edgartown and I would say Vineyard Haven where the condo is the best of the 3 and a lovely little town. The pool is fab to have and right on the condo doorstep (super handy for napping toddlers) although they had to close it for 24 h when we were there which was a bit annoying. The hot water cut out, which again was annoying given the small children situation, but nothing to do with the condo itself as our neighbors also were cut off and Dylan was helpful. The ambiance is lovely and everyone was super friendly. It was a perfect family place with no noise at night and no one going crazy. It's really well located and you can walk to the grocery store, ferry, restaurants and shops which are lovely. We did have to cycle to sample the amazing doughnuts from Back Door doughnuts in Oak Bluffs but that was probably a good thing! Also of note, it's a dry town and while you can drink in restaurants, you cant buy alcohol. Again, probably not a bad thing we had to earn our drink!! We went to the Black Dog tavern which many say is super touristy, but being tourists, it was fine with us and the lobster roll was amazing. Overall, really really nice and I am so pleased this is where we ended up for our stay in the island.
