Nine wonderful July's

5 of 5
For nine wonderful months of July my husband and I, joined now and then by various adult children, rented Ledge in Sorrento, Maine. As the listing description is completely accurate, I will relate the particular pleasures we savored. First of all, its perch. High above the water, it offers a sweeping view of bay, islands, and Acadia National Park's peaks. Linked to the charm of the perch is what the deck offers. We started the day sitting there with our early morning coffee, watching cedar waxwings dive for blueberries in the meadow patch and trying to sort out the different warbler songs. Parulas and black throated greens were constant companions, as well as a nonstop singing red eyed vireo, but hermit thrushes, other warblers, woodpeckers all joined in. Actually, if the weather was nice we ate all our meals on the deck. Over the years I have a great collection of photos recording the ever-changing cloud patterns over the mountains, often as they were reflected in our before-dinner glasses of wine! Then there is the garden, which I reported on to the owner a few summers ago: "The garden is flourishing. We have had fresh lettuce in salad every day and just shared some of the beautiful and very abundant thyme with Heather who couldn't find any at the market. New crop of lettuce on the way. Scallions, leeks, parsley, lemon balm, marjoram and chives are all exuberantly preening. And the very Japanese like dripping-water- into-a-stone-basin centerpiece is working perfectly." If you have younger children, the spring fed, surrounded by sand, town pool is a 5 minute walk from the cottage, complete with life guard and children ranging from toddlers to teenagers. And there are countless other activities available for children, as the listing described. As for activities, attractions and restaurants, all abound. Biking and hiking in Acadia National Park, sailing, early morning kayaking right off the shore ---a 5 minute walk down the hill to the shoreline below the cottage where I could keep my kayak, croquet, golf and tennis in the village. Great restaurants in Bar Harbor---a 20 minute motor boat ride away, or a 50 minute drive---as well as excellent restaurants in neighboring towns. We are no longer renting Ledge because we have acquired a son-in-law and new baby so need a different configuration of bedrooms, but we will sorely miss it.

Our Maine Vacation Paradise

5 of 5
Wow!!! Bring your camera and take a lot of pictures...you will want to re-live your week of memories. We enjoyed the sound of the water rushing over the rocks, saw eagles, seals and morning lobster boats pulling their traps. We were pleasantly surprised by a visit from a deer early one morning. The house was immaculate and was suit case ready. Everything you could need was in the well equipped kitchen. The very comfortable living room has a large window to enjoy the view of the water. The large deck was our favorite hang out. The location was ideal for visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, also enjoyed Frazer Point and Schoodic Point. Everyday was busy either mt. climbing, fishing, and picnics at the shore or visiting islands from Bar Harbor city pier or/ from Northeast Harbor. There were six in our family (ages 7 to 77 ) and it is a toss up as to who had the best time. Great place for all ages. Top of our list for a return visit.
