A Heavenly Haven Whatever the Weather

5 of 5
We were naturally disappointed when we realized that our second stay at Crest House was going to coincide with a nasty 3-day Nor'easter, but really, the only downside was that the weather precluded a leisurely walk down to the absolutely gorgeous secluded beach nearby or a cookout on the cottage's beautiful deck. Karen and Brian have outfitted the cottage with everything you might need for a rainy day - tv, wireless, games, marvelous books and magazines full of information on the area, and a better equipped kitchen than most of us probably have at home! And though the cottage is actually very spacious, it still retains a feeling of coziness, especially if you're curled up on the couch in front of the fireplace, or relaxing in that very comfortable rocking chair. Tempting as that was, we braved the weather for the short drive up to Rockland, where we visited the great Farnsworth Musuem and numerous shops and galleries on Main St. as well as the Rockland Antiques Marketplace, which is quite a museum in its own right. Rockland has lots of restaurants to choose from, and we enjoyed the Park St. Grill again and tried the Rockland Café for some excellent seafood chowder. A few miles further north in Rockport, you'll find the pricey-but-worth-it Salt Water Farm Café, and just north of there, bustling Camden. We look forward to going back to Crest House in the balmy days of summer, of course, but will always treasure the memory of our stormy stay in October. This is just an all-around great vacation venue!

Cozy cabin with beautiful views.

5 of 5
Wonderful little cabin for 4 is quiet, is private, and is lovely. We were able to enjoy the water in high tide, the beach in low tide, the house and yard at all times. The yard has sun & shade, woods and grass, paved roads, and paths off a beaten trail. We are looking forward to our next visit.

Nicely Close to It All While Wonderfully Far Away

5 of 5
This tidy cottage on a working dock was an idyllic retreat. The cottage is charmingly laid out and neatly laid out like a ship, just as the lobsterman who built it planned. Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the gentle hum of activity on the dock, as Skip (the master engineer and lobsterman manning the magical crane) swiftly settled in as the friend we all wanted to be like. My kids enjoyed exploring the plant and animal life on the island, including the tidal inlet, and jumping off the dock into the chilly waters. Just sitting on the porch, we were able to enjoy 4th of July fireworks from several nearby towns. Finally, Spruce Head Island was conveniently located close to Rockland for short shopping trips but far enough away that all our city-problems melted away. We look forward to returning -- we all want to catch up on Skip's wisdom, humor and news.
