Perfect place for our family vacation

5 of 5
Recently completed construction, the house was a perfect place for my wife, me and three kids (11, 9 and 5). Soon after we arrived, my son was quietly crossing the gravel drive to capture pictures of a doe and her fawn. Positioned above the center of town by a short drive with the deck overlooking a small stream and evergreens on two sides, it felt mostly private. (The other two cottages are a little higher in elevation and appear to have a partial view of the harbor below). The kids loved their own place in the basement. My wife and I stayed in the loft where we could sleep in yet be close enough to the kids while they woke. As for convenience, we used the kitchen for breakfast and a few dinners. The third stop of a two-week vacation, the washer and dryer were extremely helpful. One evening we used the firepit and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. (Next time we'll have to use the grill). We found the Southwest Harbor to feel more local than touristy while providing great options to grocery shop (Sawyers is really close and fantastic -- IGA is further out with decent options too). Side note: far from a problem, we were unsuccessful in connecting to the owner's wi-fi (something he suggested others experienced). And, we were not able to get Verizon wireless signal west of Somes Sound -- really not until we approached Cadillac Mountain and Bar Harbor. This was only a minor inconvenience and added to 'getting away'. I hope we're able to return sooner than later!

Wonderful Cottage and great time!

5 of 5
We just got back from an awesome stay at the Harbor Star Cottage. David and Melissa had everything we needed right at our fingertips. Keurig coffee galore, lovely laundry detergent, and every little thing that we would have at home but never think of packing. My family had a blast and with 4 kids, my wife and I needed the room to get some peace! This cottage gave us plenty of room to get our own space when needed. We would definitely book again if we go back. Great value!

Memorable Home, Memorable Vacation!

5 of 5
This home was the best! It really was everything we could want in a vacation home. The teens were having a fit about not going to the beach as usual, so they were a hard sell - but even they said this was one of the best vacations ever. Jennifer was extremely receptive to our questions (even the dumb ones). The house was located in a great spot close to Southwest Harbor. A main grocery store was at the bottom of the hill, and the town was minutes away by car. We were so glad we didn't stay in Bar Harbor - it is a lovely place, and we went there twice, but the crowds - forget it.... Southwest Harbor was quaint and had everything we needed. Good restaurants, ice cream, bike rentals and fairly close to all the places we wanted to visit on the Island. We were two families - we stuck the teens up in the bunk bedroom (top of A-frame). It wasn't until the 3rd day we realized there was a pool table in the basement! The porch which runs the length of the house was just gorgeous, looking out over the woods. There were a few homes up on our road, but you couldn't see them through the forest. The stars were amazing, especially from the hot tub. We were there the 2nd week of July and the weather was great - never had to use the AC, always a breeze... We called the house "our green cabin", but it was far from a cabin! I have done many vacation rentals over the years, and it was so refreshing to stay in a home that was really someone's vacation home - not an investment property with zero personal touches. Fun stuff we did on MDI: rented bikes and road around the ponds, having lunch at Jordan House (we timed the ride with help from bike store in SW Harbor and made reservations outside) - beautiful! We enjoyed sunset atop Cadillac Mt., after enjoying a lobster meal at one of the roadside lobster pounds (near north entrance to park). We spent an afternoon at Echo Lake for a "refreshing" swim. A special highlight was going to Sand Beach on the loop road, views were breathtaking. We took a lunch, left our stuff on the beach and hiked up and around Great Head Trail - a little challenging for some of us, but well worth it. I would highly recommend Eat a Pita restaurant for any meal in SW Harbor. My thanks to our hosts, and should we go Northeast - Downeast again, we will be sure to rent this special home.
