Perfect Home Base for Portland area!

5 of 5
My family and I (my husband and 2-year-old son) just got back from a fantastic stay at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us! The location is unbeatable (just steps from Willard Beach and within walking distance to Scratch Baking Co., which we went to every morning!) and the house was great. Very clean and felt like home. I felt like I was staying at my Grandmother's home - and I mean that as a HUGE compliment! We felt very welcome and cozy at the Birdhouse. We enjoyed spending evenings and mornings there, eating our fresh bagels on the porch overlooking the water, then heading out to enjoy Portland area activities during the day. The kitchen has everything you would need; one night we went to Terra Cotta Pasta and picked up some (delicious) meals to cook at home, which worked out great with the (very nice!) stove we had available. The owners are great to work with; they were extremely accommodating and kept communication open at all times before and after our stay. If you are looking for a great place to stay with your dog - this is it!! I wish we could have brought our dog along (we flew in from Minnesota); every day from 7:00-9:00 am and 7:00-9:00 pm Willard Beach offers off-leash dog hours. It was so cool to see all of the locals up there with their dogs; people there were so friendly and just had a great sense of community. It felt like home. Our son loved the playground on the beach and seeing all of the fun Doggies playing in the water. You can also see Portland Head Light from the point at Willard Beach - how cool! There are many great restaurants in the area, to name a few: Scratch Baking Co: Seriously, the best bagels we have ever had. Get there early. Dock's: Great family-friendly place with inexpensive seafood Saltwater Grille: On the water with a fantastic view of downtown Portland Terra Cotta Pasta: Excellent takeout; would be great to take as a picnic to the beach! The only disappointment we had was eating at The Good Table in Cape Elizabeth. Unfortunately the food was not great and prices were very high in contrast. Would not recommend that one. If you are looking for a cozy, wonderful, homey place to stay in Portland - this is it! SO glad we stayed here and not some stuffy, cold hotel room that would probably cost more than what we payed here. We can't wait to return to the Birdhouse!!! We are already talking about coming back.

Lovely Coastal Rental!

5 of 5
Had a wonderful 5-day stay at this well-appointed and extremely clean cottage. The decor is very pleasant, the master bed comfortable and the location ideal for visiting the Portland area and beyond. There's a beautiful coastal spot at the end of the street. Michael the owner was readily available, most accommodating, and gracious in meeting some specific needs that I have. I would not hesitate to rent this property again! Thank you very much, Michael, for helping to make my stay at Willard Beach a wonderful experience.

Highly recommended

5 of 5
This home is excellent. It is meticulously updated and maintained. It's small, but 10 times better than a hotel room. Even though it is in an urban/suburban neighborhood, there is no road noise at all - just the occasional fog horn. Four good restaurants are a 5-10 minute walk away. It's really just a cool place where people live with lots of things to do and see. The whole area around South Portland did not feel touristy to us at all. Finally, even though we were pleasantly surprised by everything else, the main reason we picked this house is because it was one of the only houses on the Maine coastline that will allow a stay of less than 1 week. Coming from California, where it's rare for more than 2 or 3 nights to be required, I couldn't believe people put up with almost every owner requiring a full week stay or more. Thank you Patti and Britt!
