Entirely Breathtaking!

5 of 5
Everything about this trip was wonderful. There's little else like the Maine shore in autumn! The entire process was so easy, that for a while I thought it ~too~ easy, but everything went off according to plan. We were greeted at the boat launch, loaded up our bags, and the adventure began. The island is beautiful, with so much to wander through and explore. The woods are so thick and beautiful. Trails, rocks, beaches... too much to describe to put it all in here. The accommodations were top-notch, the main house very comfortable. Watching the sun set from the crows nets gave me some spectacular photos. This will likely become a yearly adventure for us.

What a surprise!

5 of 5
Your home is gorgeous! The pictures do not do it justice. It was way more than we expected. The layout of the home is perfect. The downstairs area was basically a separate area where everything is there for another family. It was very private and gave all of us some space. We had everything we needed dishes, linens, direct TV and the master bath was very spacious. The view from the back porch was picturesque. The lake (pond) was very relaxing. Sitting on the deck and listening to the loons was the best. Fish were plentiful but gave my brother quite a challenge. We appreciated all the brochures for site seeing and dining out. But, with such beautiful surroundings, who would want to leave! We would recommend this home to anyone. There is much to do for all ages or just to relax and get away from the big city. Marie is a great hostess!

Once in a lifetime vacation

5 of 5
We gather from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston for a week-long 80th birthday celebration for my father in-law. The dirt road is long, so you know the property is private. Each turn you leave your busy life behind and begin to exhale and take in the clean air. You have now entered Deer Lodge land and see a most welcoming meandering pathway of rocks and plants marking off the 5 separate buildings on this truly one of a kind property. Kathryn and Christian have turned the original boys camp from the 1900s into a home compound worthy of the set "On Golden Pond" or "Northern Exposure". The kitchen is stocked for any type of chef - gourmet to grill master. We claimed "kid land" as the building with a large flat tv (no cable) and a bookcase full of games and DVDs which they could occupy as the adults had wine in the main lodge. Deer Lodge is a place where everyone has their own experiences. A grandfather reading his book, a son creating lego space ships, and a niece on her laptop updating her virtual world game. Yes, there is wifi. Here are a few things we did during the week: Rent a boat from The Birches and drive 10 minutes across the lake from Deer Lodge to Mount Kineo for a hike. Pack a picnic and walk 20 minutes into the forest to see Moxie Falls. Contact Moxie Outdoor and take a 1/2 day duckie (kayak) down the lower Kennebec River. It was perfect for our entire family as we floated for 2 hours with a gentle current. Adventure seekers don't miss doing a full day of white water rafting. Visit the cute town of Greenville and don't miss The Moosehead Historical Society. The docents dressed in period costume and explain the rich history of Greenville along with the gossip. It's a small home, so would suggest leaving the kids behind. It received distinction as one of the finest small town museums in the country. Communication was top-notch before, during, and after our stay, as both owners helped to create a magical week in Moosehead. They were so generous with their time and knowledge. I never felt rushed when I kept asking just one more question from Los Angeles. This is more than a rental, this is their special family place and we feel honored to be able to spend time in this wonderful home. If I could rate this with 10 stars I would! Thank you Kathryn and Christian for making this a week my family will never ever forget.
