Peaceful Family Retreat

5 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay in this house and on Isle au Haut. My family of 8 had plenty of space and very comfortable rooms and we took advantage of the wonderful views from the porch - especially the sunsets. We found everything we needed and the caretaker was very helpful with all of our questions about the house and the island. We met several friendly, welcoming people who are year-round residents in this small isolated community, and we bought our lobsters directly from the lobster man who was our neighbor! The provided car was even an adventure in itself! We would love to return! One minor note - the amenities should be updated to remove the grill and child's high chair which were not available (though we had the sense that someone would have lent them if we just asked!).

great place for a family gathering

5 of 5
The lone Elm farm was great. Awesome view. The house was clean and worked well. Sheets where very nice and pay it forward attitude made everything so relaxing. no trips to the grocery store for salt or a stew pot everything you needed was right there. we loved the mowed trails out to the lookout and the 7 foot wide stone wall was beautiful. Because their is a barn that is attached you get a history lesson just walking about. The barn has been kept in its working set up and the inside grain silo and hay elevator give you the opportunity to imagine the past; see the dust and heat of the harvest and hear the grain coming down into the bucket. Beautiful example of living in New England 100 years ago, but you still get wifi and a flat screen if you like:)

A Vacation to Remember!

5 of 5
Our week at Katie Dove was awesome. Most days started with a big country breakfast we made in the kitchen, followed by treasure hunts on the private beach. Our children, ages 7, 3 and 1, collected a bounty of sea glass and unique stones/shells. Each tide brought new treasures. So fun. This is such a relaxing area! Our son loved feeding the three little hens on the property and eagerly stalked the chicken coop waiting to collect the eggs. (Optional, you don't have to do anything with the chickens. Peter was just sweet enough to let them take over collecting the eggs.) Our son would proudly bring his eggs in the kitchen every morning and insist on helping crack and cook them. PERFECT LOCATION! We enjoyed many day trips: whale watching at Campobello Island (Canada), charming fishing/lobster village of Cutler, shopping in St Andrews (Canada), enjoying chocolates at Monica's in Lubec and even a Pirate Festival in Eastport! The pirate festival had a cool craft fair where my boys chose Moose Antler souvenirs. About the house: We cooked dinner most nights here and we ate like kings...from fresh lobster to steak. Besides the well equipped kitchen and fire-pit, there is a nice large gas grill off the back deck - cooked evenly and plenty of gas ready to go. The house is furnished in a simple style with many antiques but it is actually quiet comfortable. Peter was even kind enough to set up a toddler bed for the baby and surprisingly she took right to it! The two full bathrooms have been updated and are very user friendly. The upstairs bathroom has a shower/tub which is great for kids and the one downstairs is just inside when you come from the back porch and was handy for showering off the sand after our beach adventures. The pictures don't do it justice, it has a spacious floor plan and two enclosed porches so you're not cramped at all. The farm has apple trees and wild maine blueberries and black berries so we enjoyed fresh fruit daily. Peter was a gracious host. He even put out some beach toys, a wagon and radio flyer tricycle for the kids to enjoy. He made it clear he was only a phone call away if we needed anything. Our vacation ran smoothly but I'm confident he would have bent over backwards had any issues or needs come up. The home does not have internet/wifi but our iphones/ipad had decent reception so it wasn't a big deal. We look forward to coming back again! The Shlyapnikov Family High Point, NC
