The essence of Maine: edifying, restful, authentic

5 of 5
I'd never been to Maine before but had read and researched widely and was looking for an experience that measured up to my ideal notion of Maine. My expectations were exceeded. The location and setting is sublime, the house an authentic, functional cottage just the right size and the outlook over the front garden and the small bay picturesque. I swam thrice a day, ate the freshest lobsters and crabs at almost every meal, relaxed on the stoep and read Thoreau and immersed myself in the raw, visceral beauty that is rural Harspwell. A textbook perfect Maine visit. Thank you!

Well Appointed Rustic bliss

5 of 5
For those retired adventurers still seeking those rare quiet retreats in the seclusion of whispering tree breezes with the salty tang hanging in the air, but want a clean, comfortable place to perch when sleeping pads are no longer an option due to chiropractor bills, this is the place for you. I took my 17 year old son and 7 year old niece to stay at Raspberry Cove this summer and it was one of those summers whose memories will forever exceed the two dimensional pictures that represent it. One of our favorite outings that we did more than once was to paddle straight out to the outcropping of rocks past the string of shoreline to your left. (You MUST time the tide. I did it as the tide was rising where I could still get the canoe out of the cove, so that we could still go out and come back in before low tide. The round trip total took about an hour and a half if memory serves.) We packed a lunch and bottles of water, perching the canoe carefully on the rocks so it didn't float away- (*another paranoid mom note- be careful about this, the waves are crossing at the rocks and it WILL float away. The water is VERY deep here. You DON'T want that to happen. Holding the rope is a good extra precaution.) One of the days, a seal popped it's head out and looked at us from less than ten feet away- apparently we stole his sunning spot! My niece loved looking for the broken shells that the seal left behind while my son looked for snails and other sea creatures groping to the rocks. The game on the way back was to count the moon jelly fish. We did see one poisonous jelly fish that was over a foot in diameter with tendrils hanging down over a foot long. It was gorgeous, but I was very thankful we were in the boat. It is also important to note that I used to teach canoeing, and my son is very experienced in canoeing, so please don't try this outing if you don't have experience. Even just a tour around the cove is a lot of fun (when the tide is high), you don't need to go out as far as we did to fully enjoy the experience. My point in saying all of this is that this cottage is PERFECT someone who likes a little adventure. But if you want to stroll down to the shore on a brick or paved lighted sidewalk in your Coach shoes, this isn't the place for you. The house is well maintained, the owner provided any information or needs I asked for, and I highly recommend it! Just be cautious at the shoreline and on the steps... remember the term "rustic bliss."

Great home base for a beautiful vacation

5 of 5
We spent three nights at Bay Vista and had a fantastic time. The house has everything you need and was a very comfortable place to wake up and come home to after exploring the area during the days. You can't beat the gorgeous views of the water from the master bedroom and living room. The amenities were all in working order and everything was nice and clean. The nearby SchoolHouse Cafe deserves special mention and immediately became our favorite way to start our days - delicious coffee and breakfast. Each day started there, included a couple of beautiful hikes (they are everywhere and well marked), walks along coves and beaches, and delicious dinners in the Harpswell area or Brunswick (loved El Camino). We highly recommend Bay Vista. Hope to get back there someday...
