Great Vacation on this Quaint Island

5 of 5
I can't say enough nice things about our stay on Peaks Island. The house was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Casco Bay. A short walk from Picnic Point and Sandy Beach as well as from the ferry terminal, shops, restaurants and the grocery store. We brought our car over as we were traveling with our 9 month old, and she doesn't travel lightly! Once we were on the island, though, we were able to walk everywhere we needed or wanted to go. We were easily able to pop over to Portland a few times to shop and dine in some of the yummy restaurants (one of which we found from menus that Suzy (the owner) had left for visitors). The home is in wonderful condition and has clearly been lovingly maintained. There is a great deck upstairs that was the perfect spot for morning coffee or to laze away the afternoon reading a book or just watching the boats sail by in the bay. There were multiple living spaces downstairs, including a TV room, living room, dining room, and an enclosed porch that is all windows and has a dining table and chairs making it the perfect spot for meals with a view of the bay. Suzy and her husband were great to rent from. They truly wanted to make sure that we were comfortable in our stay. Suzy even wrote to let us know that we would be able to check in early on our arrival day, which was a huge help to us. In short, we would rent this home again in an instant, and hope to make a trip to Peaks Island an annual trip.

Homey, comfortable, everything you need!

5 of 5
Staying here was like being at the family summer house. The house was delightfully full of chachkies, rugs, wall ornaments, and furniture. In the kitchen are miscellaneous utensils, bowls, dishes and the like for preparing a meal. The large porch gets a mix of sun and shade; it was a great place to eat meals and lay out to take a snooze or read a book. There are three rooms: two larger (but still small) and one very small. One of the larger rooms has a queen bed and closet, the other has two single beds and a closet. The smallest room has a double bed against the wall with no closet. Also there are two bathrooms with showers (one has a newish washer/dryer), a kitchen, dining room, and living room with TV and cable. There is a limit of 6 people staying here at a time so as not to put too much pressure on the plumbing but even without this consideration, more than 6 would be *very* challenging. I stayed with my sisters, two baby nephews, me and husband on the first weekend. In the room with the two single beds and we were able to squeeze a pack-n-play in the corner. With the toddlers, not having a bath tub was a challenge, as were the steep stairs, and many interesting models and such all around, but being on the island provided plenty of interesting places to go and things to do with small children. The second weekend we had two aunts, my mom, me and my husband (5 adults). We never felt crowded. Another note: The walls are paper thin. Although there is plenty of space to get some time alone, you can hear most sounds through the vent in the floor or through the walls. Peaks is a great place to stay, it's quiet, the people are friendly, and there are lots of lovely walks to go on. We had a little bit of an emergency and after going to the ER, the island doctors were wonderful (and very close to this cottage!) with the follow-up. A few warnings: in the summer months it can be a challenge to get a car on a car ferry because they fill up fast, there is a lot of glass on the beaches and shallow water so you'll need to always wear sandals or keep a sharp eye out, the beaches are small and rocky, and the island store has a very limited selection. The watchword with island living is always planning, planning, planning!

A cozy spot on an amazing island

4 of 5
Our experience at Peaks was perfect - we never left the island and rarely used our car (mostly strollers for children or bikes). We had a total of 5 small children and 8 adults in our group and there was plenty of room for all in the cabin. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies and we mostly ate in. The house itself was very nice - plenty of space for children to spread out and play games etc. It would be even better if the downstairs could get more of a breeze w/ screen doors. the location was pretty good - near the fun indian trails which were perfect for children to hike and also close to town and our favorite beach on Greenwood St. Next time I may choose a house a bit closer to the ocean to be able to hear the water and also being near a pond there were definitely a good number of mosquitos to deal with, but nothing extreme. I would definitely recommend this house if you want something affordable and not super luxurious to use as a home base for a fun week on peak's.
