Stunning home that anchors idyllic spot in Maine!

5 of 5
Location: The house sits only a few feet from one of the nicest beaches in Maine. At high tide the waves gently lap 25ft from the edge of the yard, at low tide you will find 150ft of sand and lots of room to play. The house is a few miles from the Owl’s Head lighthouse, the Owl’s Head General Store (that serves great burgers) and the Knox County Airport (KRKD), should you wish to fly rather than drive approx. 3hrs from Boston. The town of Rockland is only 5 mi /12 min away. The town boasts many delightful restaurants and shops without feeling as touristy as Camden or Bar Harbor. We ate at Primo (fantastic for foodies, reservations required in advance), Café Mira, 3Crows and Rustica. On the north end of town we found a great grocery store (Shaw’s) and a Walmart should you forget something. Day trips to Camden, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor provided lots to see and do. House: The house itself is as beautiful as the pictures. Recently constructed by a family as a private home, it is perfectly set up for two families with younger children or a family of four traveling with one set of grandparents. The master bedroom has a very comfortable queen bed, large bath and a private deck. There are two children’s rooms each that have built in twin beds with full sized trundles (a feat accomplished because of the slope of the roof). There is an office with a pull out couch. They share a bath at that end of the hall. Downstairs, with a fair amount of privacy is another queen bedded room with its own bath. The house has many porches, interesting nooks and places to hang out and read or watch all the boats go by. The kitchen is fully furnished and there is a grill for use as well. The house comes equipped with 4 kayaks and lots of beach toys and games. We played nightly badminton matches on the back lawn. Final thoughts: For those considering a trip to Maine, I don’t think you will find a better place to call home for a week. The owners could not have been any nicer to work with or more accommodating and their home is one of the nicest we have ever had the opportunity to borrow for a week.

An Artist's Heaven

5 of 5
I have stayed at Owls Head numerous times. The house has an open, clean, comfortable, and airy aspect. What the picture does not show is the lovely view of a road that winds down to the waterfront. In the distance are islands of pine trees, ocean, and big sky with soaring gulls. When you sit at the big wooden kitchen table or on the deck just outside you can gaze outward on all this beauty. It's like being tranquilized! What makes a vacation so wonderful here is that not only are there country pleasures but within a short driving distance are other scenic towns, restaurants, theater, wonderful museums, including an amazing Transportation Museum and the Farnsworth art museum. There is nothing quite like the coast of Maine and in particular Owls Head.

Perfect get away for a couple and their dogs

5 of 5
One of the measures of a great place is how much you enjoy yourself when the weather doesn't cooperate with your original plans. We had stormy weather most of our week, and had a great time watching the waves. The setup with the sitting room facing the water was excellent, with a toasty gas insert to keep us feeling cozy as the wind blew around the house. It was also fun watching the lobster boats check out their pots in the bay. We also had a few days of sunshine, and the outdoor furniture was perfect to get a little sun. The dogs also liked basking in the sunbeams on the floor. Walking to the beach involved rocks, but not a problem at all with good shoes. If that still makes you nervous, you can walk along the road to the public access for an easier entry. We really enjoyed being tucked away from it all while still being close enough to things if we wanted. We bought lobsters several times from the pier in Owls Head (Ship to Shore Lobster), and recommend trying new shell if available for easier cracking. We also visited the Owls Head General Store for the award-winning hamburgers. A highlight was the dinner we had at Primo (a short drive to Rockland). It was one of the best meals we have had anywhere anytime, including Michelin rated restaurants. Everything was clean and in good order. There are lots of plates and glasses, more than the two of us needed. We had one problem with the hot water heater while there which was promptly fixed. The owner offered to come wait for the plumber, which would have been great if we had urgent plans, but given that our plans were to laze about, we just waited for him ourselves. It's nice to know that any problems could be promptly addressed. We definitely plan to be back. If you're looking for a little hideaway of your own, you'll probably like it too.
