We had a wonderful 5 day vacation at the Blue Heron Cottage. The lake is beautiful, and we had a great time kayaking and fishing. Our kids caught dozens of fish while we were there. We visited the offshore island, and got several great views of nesting eagles (2 adult and 2 juveniles.) There were also loons everywhere and osprey nesting nearby. The cabin had everything we needed; It was very nice not to have to worry about bringing linens and towels. The kids enjoyed watching movies in the evenings up in the loft. The view is amazing right out the front windows. There are 9 cottages in this little family owned complex--some are closer to the water and some are further up on the hill. Overall, it is a very laid back and quiet place to relax. The pond is very shallow...you can wade out 100 feet from shore. This makes it very safe for children and great for fishing. Swimming was OK--the main beach has a pebbly and soft silt entry, and there are a lot of freshwater shellfish everywhere. Beach shoes are a good idea. Swimming was better off the shore of the island, or at different areas along the shore where we kayaked. The unit provides 2 or 3 kayaks for your use, but there are others (and canoes) at the complex that you can ask to borrow...there always seemed to be enough for everybody. We brought a lot of lawn chairs which we didn't need, because there were plenty of chairs on the beach. The cabin is in a remote area; the nearest grocery store was about 15 minutes, and there's only really one local place to eat (Fast Eddie's Drive In.) You have to drive 30 minutes towards Augusta or Lewiston for more choices. Overall, we enjoyed the cottage and would recommend it to others.
