We stayed at Mainstream Camp for a week in August 2014 as part of a 5 week vacation around the region. We wanted a good base in a small, real American community next to a lake in the heart of nature. This cabin is just that!
We loved the lake at all times of the day; drinking coffee on the dock watching the early morning mist was always a treat and we enjoyed some great sunsets from the same place at the other end of the day. In between we had much wonderful and relaxing time as a family. We canoed, rowed, swam the lake and fished in the most stunning & peaceful scenery.
The lake is very natural and quite weedy around the edges and for this reason Charles (the owner) has extended the dock. There were still a few weeds in the 'jumping off' area at the end but it was easy (& quite fun & refreshing) to spend 10 minutes immersed in the water & pulling them out on the first day.
The very small town of Harmony is great. The General Store is a good place for (a huge range of) food & supplies but also for a few souvenirs. The Breakfast Nook was interesting - a great experience & personal service but it did take a long time before the food arrived (approx an hour) considering we were the only people there. Try Lumberjack Lodge just outside the town on the road north.
One of our highlights (& one of those experiences that you want to keep all to yourself) was our visit to the 'Friday Night Jammers' in the Community Hall on Friday evening. The hall was full to watch the handful of local who turn up for this 'open mic' night consisting of acoustic instruments only. The dynamic of the group changes week by week & often song by song and the range of tunes was great. Word quickly got around that we were visiting from overseas and before we knew it the musicians introduced us, dedicated a song then, at the end, got us performing! A unique night!
A little further afield (25 mins) is Newport with a Walmart for 'big' shopping. There are also a number of restaurants & wifi spots if you need them.
We loved this cabin, it's remote location close to the lake and the tranquillity it offered. Don't forget your bug spray, bring books & prepare for a complete switch off.
