Spent a lot of time wondering if this would be the right fit. I'm not an avid outdoorsman, so I guess I was a bit skeptical. It was beyond perfect!! LOCATION: Lake is HUGE. Island is far enough out that you feel snug and secure in paradise, but not so far that you worry about getting back. Paddle from the mainland dock to the island dock took 5-7 minutes. The lake is quite shallow in places. Island feels perfectly sized. Large and mid-sized trees mixed in with smaller new growth feels like you're in the woods. Views from every part of the cabin & island are spectacular. I was here the week before July 4th, but surroundings are very quiet. Power boats stay way way out. Once dusk comes, the ospreys, loons, and frogs take over with their twilight songs. When the wind was right I could hear music coming from the boys' camp across the way on Fri & Sat night (never past 10 pm). ACCOMMODATIONS: Cabin is very clean and exceeded my expectations! Actually looks like the photos inside! Very impressed with how cozy and clean the place was. Decks and picnic table were great. Original part of the cabin (now the kitchen) is an architectural treasure. Takes you back to the 1940s without feeling dirty or old in any way. A wonderful throwback. Bedroom and living room are both additions to the original structure, and they are light and airy. Bed was surprisingly comfortable and ventilation throughout is perfect. There was always a breeze. Plates, glasses, paper goods, bug spray, cleaning supplies, first aid kit, etc. all in ample supply. Basic cooking ingredients too! Three very nice oil lamps work perfectly one in each room, and battery lanterns are also on hand. The bathroom/shed/outhouse? Astonishingly clean and odor free! This was one aspect I was initially hesitant over. Out the bedroom slider, down the stairs, about 8 steps and you're there. Very doable for 5 days. Canoeing and swimming here is outstanding. If you're going to walk in the water, definitely have something on your feet that is secure (sandals kept getting pulled off, as the sand in the lake is squishy!) NEARBY: The island is so perfect I didn't need to leave much! Gardiner has a nice wine bar, steakhouse, homemade donuts (Frosty's), and supermarket/drug store on the edge of town. Hallowell has a great Thai/sushi place (Cafe de Bangkok) and lovely shops. Skip Augusta - nothing of note to see really. One of the best vacations I have been on. Thank you!!
