                      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

                      5 of 5
--Review by account-holder's wife-- This was the most relaxing vacation I’ve had for as long as I can remember. The moment you step onto Camp Galashiels’ wraparound porch and see the ocean, all the troubles melt away and your vacation has truly begun. Located well away from the hustle and bustle, this place is not for excitement-seekers, but rather those who want a simple, no-fuss family vacation. The generations-old structure, lovingly maintained and preserved, is rustic, warm and cozy, yet surprisingly breezy and open, a perfect mix of refuge and lookout. Full of little treasures and wonders (like a corner porch swing facing the sea and a vintage copy of a Will Rogers diatribe against prohibition which had my husband laughing out loud), Camp Galashiels welcomed us with a fully-stocked games corner, comfy couch and window seats overlooking the ocean, plenty of extra bedding and all the intriguing nooks and crannies you would expect from a great old house. This is a place where generations of families have made happy memories, a place with a soul. Though secluded, there are ample opportunities to stay connected, whether by meeting friendly locals during your explorations or by chatting with whoever happens to be enjoying the small beach below. Though there are never more than a few people there at any time, my young daughter had no difficulty making a new friend each day or finding a new niche to explore. The kitchen is very well equipped with every cooking utensil known to man (three different cast iron pans, mixing bowls galore, innumerable lobster shears…), including a good selection of pantry basics as well as plastic wrap, aluminum foil and parchment paper. You literally need only to bring your own food. I found an antique mezzaluna, pointy forks (a high prize in my family), and an instrument of indeterminate use that turned out to be a vintage egg slicer. Everything here is in good condition, albeit used. Hosts Betsy and Steve are gracious and friendly, yet discreet. Betsy didn’t insist when we showed only modest enthusiasm for lobster (though we could tell she was a bit disappointed). We capitulated, however, and bowed to local Maine tradition on our last evening, going down to the docks to buy 4 big lobsters right off the fishing boat. I have to say, this is one of the best vacation memories we are likely to ever have. Thank you, Betsy and Steve, for sharing your lovely summer home with us. This was just what the doctor ordered.

                      Peaceful Well Equipped Cottage

                      5 of 5
Well equipped clean cottage with great entertainment in nature -- beautiful song bird and osprey activity from the deck. The trails through the forest are beautiful and picturesque. The Owner provides great advice on the best places to eat which do not disappoint. Extremely quiet with amazing sunsets.

Paradise on Crystal Pond and Hatchet Cove

                      5 of 5
We LOVED our stay in this wonderful cottage with its view from the terrific back porch down to Crystal Pond, the easy 5 minute walk to a quiet rocky beach & its mere steps away from the always fascinating Hatchet Cove. Just across the small road you can sit at the owner's deck on the cove enjoying the breeze or toasting the moon's sparkling path across the night sea. A beautiful setting among tall trees, ferns and mosses surrounds a well equipped and most welcoming cottage. The kitchen has all you need to steam a local lobster with all the fixings, or simply heat up a fresh fish sandwich from the great little town grocery. The cottage is sparkling clean and decorated with authentic Maine touches. The owners have anticipated your every need and the cottage has maps, guidebooks and pamphlets so you can plan visits to nearby areas like Camden, Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid lighthouse, Mt. Battie and so much more. Nearby are wonderful restaurants, fun shopping, quaint old homes and beautiful drives. A quick Google search will provide long lists of interesting things to do and experience in the area...ferry boat rides to nearby islands; kyaking the bay, lighthouse museums. Friendship is a true lobster/fishing village with many families who can trace their lineage right back to settlement days. For a small town we were amazed at all the local activities available: festivals, music evenings, art & craft events, sail boat races, farm produce sales, etc. Lynn and Bill are helpful and will be sure that you find something that meets your interests if you wish. They are always nearby for assistance but will give you privacy and quiet time if you prefer. The cottage is perfect for stress free, quiet days or as a base to explore this beautiful area. We did use the excellent WiFi service in the cottage, and on lazy days sometimes watched the televisions in the living area and on the wonderful back porch. It would be hard to say what our favorite things were about our stay in this delightful cottage, but I think our daily walk to the beach where we enjoyed the ocean breeze and our time on the back porch where we could enjoy the sparkling water of Crystal Pond were at the top of our list. Be sure to bring your binoculars so you can check out the sail boats, islands and wildlife. Maybe you'll be lucky,, as we were, to see Wood Ducks with groups of small baby ducks scooting alongside in the pond. You will love your time in this very special cottage!
