We recently returned from a wonderful week at the Woodberry Cottage in Deer Isle. My wife had been planning for more than two years an event that would bring our entire, immediate family together under one roof: sons, spouses and granddaughters. All told we were ten.
Based solely on the rental agency's description and the recommendation of a friend, my wife rented the Woodberry Cottage sight unseen for a week in August. What a perfect choice it turned out to be! The cottage was all that was advertised plus furnishings and amenities that we hadn't expected. Matched silverware and enough place settings for twice our number. We found every kitchen utensil imaginable, satellite-based Wi-Fi, an extensive DVD and VHS collection, foosball, air hockey and more.
We enjoyed time in the adirondack chairs overlooking the ocean and found our way down to the rocky shore during both low tide (tons of starfish) and high tide (swim time). We bought lobsters from the Fishermen's Cooperative in Stonington and steamed them over fresh-picked seaweed in the propane cooker generously provided by our hosts. We launched our kayaks from a public landing just ten minutes from the cottage as well as from the park off Sandy Beach Road in Stonington. Some of us visited galleries while others enjoyed hiking on trails provided by the Island Heritage Trust.
The grandparents even got away for a lobster dinner on their own at the Friendly Fisherman Restaurant.
All of our expectations for the Woodberry Cottage and the family vacation, as high as they were, were exceeded.
