A Maine Classic

5 of 5
We have rented 10 different cabins in recent years in Mid-Coast Maine, and this one is the classiest and coziest. It's what you've probably dreamed a cabin in Maine ought to look like. It's only 2 miles from Boothbay Harbor, 2.5 from a large supermarket, but it's tucked away on a quiet cul-de-sac and a world away. It's surrounded by trees, yet has a terrific view to the ocean, with wind and waves the only sounds. It's 20 yards down a stone-stepped path, and another 20 yards down to the dock from the cabin. The cabin comes with a canoe you can use on Appalachee Pond, a block's distance away. The pond has a great beach for kids and is very pretty to canoe around, but you'll cover the whole thing in half an hour. The owners allowed us to bring the canoe to tidewater as we are very avid canoers, and we had many great paddles around Linekin Bay, which is about 3 miles long and half that wide, with several islands to paddle around. Each day we were passed by busy lobster boats pulling their traps and circled above by osprey. There is a floating dock you can leave the canoe on overnight. You can access the water at any tide, unlike other places we've stayed at where the dock is high and dry at low tide. The bedrooms are not large, but adequate. The main bedroom has a queen bed, the other two a twin bed each, and there are two bathrooms, each one between the main bedroom and one of the single rooms. One of the single rooms is on the ocean side, with nice views to the water and waves on the shore lulling you to sleep. The kitchen was well-equipped. The dining table was well-lit and large. The living room is the real treasure here: large and almost glowing from the log walls, log beams, and shiny wooden floor with colorful rugs about. There is a large plush sofa and easy chairs, also well-lit, and in a corner another table where we could spread out maps or do a jigsaw puzzle, had we ever found the time. Finally, there is a porch on the water side where you can spend many pleasant hours reading and listening to the waves. Boothbay Harbor and area attractions are nearby. If you enjoy hiking, the Boothbay Region Land Trust owns and maintains many nature preserves nearby, including one right next to Appalachee Pond. They have downloadable trail maps on their website. The owners live right across the road and are very helpful. Between them and the beauty of the cabin and the area, it was very hard to leave. We’re already making plans to return.

A peaceful haven in a wonderful setting

5 of 5
We arrived from Boston in the dark so only took in the space and comfort of the house, both of which are superb, with great bedrooms, baths and all the equipment you could ever need. In the morning we could see how beautiful the gardens and surrounding property are and walked down to the lake for a lovely view and the peace that being next to water can bring. The whole Boothbay area was a delight from the Botanical Gardens, seaside walks and historical buildings to the great food (try the tapas at the Boat House bistro). The town is just a few minutes drive and has everything you need as well as boat trips to explore the bays. Susan had left lots of brochures and maps to make planning our excursions so easy. We would definitely recommend Sunny Woods to anyone who plans on visiting this lovely part of the world.

Outstanding, cozy location, lovely lake!

5 of 5
After my one caveat: the house is small, so only suitable for couples or small (3-4 person) families (one BR with a double, one BR with bunk bed), you could not find a more lovely place. This was our second stay there and prepare for a real treat. Kim the owner improved the master bed (used to squeak) over last year and we had a great time again swimming and kayaking and dining on the dock. The place is very well landscaped, kitchen very well stocked (not great for dining room but fine for meal prep), and Kim and her mother very accommodating and helpful. Definitely would stay here anytime.
