Wonderful stay in this charming waterfront cottage

5 of 5
The photos don't do justice to the beautiful panoramic view from both the living room and the deck. Four adults spent a week here and never tired of watching the lobster boats come and go right out our window. After spending just five hours in Bar Harbor, we were very glad to be staying on the " quiet side" of the island. We enjoyed all the usual activities in Acadia, and in addition enjoyed ( in no particular order): sailing trip w/ Sail Acadia, hiking Beech Mtn Trail, canoeing on Long Pond, hiking both Ship Harbor Trail & Wonderland Trail, and eating 5 times at Thurstons. A fabulous week at Crow's Nest!

Relaxing week in rustic ocean side cabin

4 of 5
We recently returned from a week long vacation at Foxfield and had a fun, relaxing time fully avoiding the summer crowds closer to Bar Harbor. The cabin is located at the end of a dirt road. The directions provided by the rental company were not quite accurate--some of the road names were different--but we did eventually find the house. Arriving in the daylight definitely helped. Bring tons of mosquito repellant---they were vicious!! The cabin feels very secluded and we never heard any people, although there are houses in fairly close proximity on either side. It was wonderful to be able to bring our dog and he loved running in the yard and on the rocky beach, as well as swimming in the ocean (he didn't mind the 55 degree water!). We rented a tandem kayak for the week--the kayak was delivered to the house and was very reasonable. The kayaking from the property was some of the best we found in the area. We ate lobster at Thurstons and even cooked our own at the house. We also had breakfast one morning at Grumpy's which was delicious. We hiked Acadia Mtn which was close by and provided stunning views of Sommes Sound. The house itself is comfortable. Our only complaints were that the bathroom shower is extremely small and the shower curtain and shower were pretty dirty. The picture window also needed a good cleaning. The living room would be much more comfortable with a full sized couch instead of the cluster of chairs. Although there are small built-in couches on either side of the room, they are awkward for adults to enjoy together. The bed was very comfortable and the linens very high quality. The cabin was otherwise clean and the kitchen well appointed. We loved hanging out on the back deck watching the lobster boats and the amazing sunsets. The trail to the beach is steep and beach is very rocky. At low tide the rocks are quite slippery so people with children or elderly people may not feel they can access the water easily. Otherwise, if you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure, away from the tourists, you will really love this place! We hope to return!

Memorable Maine

5 of 5
We chose The Centennial Homestead and Family Lighthouse for a muilt-generation family vacation. It proved to be the perfect setting. Located approximately 20 minutes from Bar Harbor and on the Island Explorer bus route it has easy access to Acadia Park. Being at the end of a quiet road yet within walking distance to the town dock and a lobster pound it provided family members from age 66 to 6 with activities. The house has ample room for all eight members. The multiple levels and sitting areas allowed everyone to find there own space to read, watch TV or enjoy a pleasant conversation. The lighthouse was a thrill for all family members and provided a view often not available as well as many picturesque photo opportunities. Lynn the property manager could not be more helpful. She answered our questions promptly and checked in to make sure all our needs were met. The house was in perfect order upon our arrival. Learning about The Homestead and life of the Silverman family only added to the experience. Our family developed a better appreciation for this special part of the world. It is not often than you are provided with a wonderful experience while helping others. Through the generosity of Mr. Silverman a vacation at The Homestead benefits many through his philanthropic efforts.
