I was admittedly concerned when I saw the last review, after having already booked this cottage earlier this year. I was immediately relieved when I pulled up, with my children, and met the owner and she gave us a quick tour of the cottage and advice on getting around Mt. Desert Island.
The cottage is secluded in the woods but an easy drive to all points on the island...it was so fun to explore from there--we choose to be away from busyness though Bar Harbor isn't flashy or noisy! The cottage is beautifully and lovingly furnished. We cooked in most nights and used the charcoal grill, had a fire one night in the fireplace and made s'mores. All of the TVs worked. The owner's artwork is hanging throughout the cottage which made it that much more special. The outside of the cottage was as described and beautifully tranquil. In retrospect, I found the prior review somewhat nit-picky...this is someone's home after all...doesn't anyone else live in a house with a door that sticks or own an appliance with some duct tape on it that still works fine? We didn't use the microwave once. We did do some laundry though before we left for home which made unpacking easier!
It was soooo quiet and dark at night, perfect sleeping conditions. Though the owner stays in her attached studio, once she said goodbye and "have fun" to us on day 1, we never saw her again for the entire length of our stay. She generously left us a gift card for breakfast at Two Cats downtown which we gratefully enjoyed and recommend to everyone.
The one piece of advice I would give is that I would not recommend this lovely escape to families with small children. The cottage is furnished with beautiful items that little hands would migrate toward. It is, as described in that earlier review, more of a one-bedroom with a loft that sleeps two or three additional people, so 5 comfortably. But my teenaged children and I loved, and were grateful for, the lovely accommodations which were well-worth the summer rental price.
Oh, and the phone never rang...:)
