Superb walkability to sea, shops, and food

4 of 5
This house is designed for a large group (see below for a bathroom caveat). It has the greatest view of Frenchman's Bay of all the private properties on the street. It's a very short walk to all you might want for a coastal vacation -- ocean front, shopping, good dining and great seafood and pizza. I would recommend confirming the date of arrival with the owner a day ahead of arrival to just make sure all is ready and access to the property goes without a hitch. I traveled here with my parents, my children and my grandchildren. There was plenty of space for all of us -- even enough space to get away from one another when needed (which we needed). The "big" kitchen -- as opposed to the one next to it -- is a chef's dream, unless she needs space to store food supplies or tries to remember which drawer or cupboard a utensil or pot was taken from. (Although ugly, a label on cupboards and drawers in the kitchen could help visitors put things back where they belong and help us find what we need without going through the massive space.) Bedrooms are all upstairs, which are accessed from two staircases -- one a very grand one near the front entrance and the second from the kitchen area. Bedrooms are all a good size, some with twin beds, most with double or larger. The difficulty here comes with bathroom locations. There is a half bath downstairs, which is easily accessible to all. There is an older full bath upstairs that is off a main hallway near where the kitchen stairs go up. The other two full baths are only accessible from a bedroom. One is between to adjoining bedrooms and not accessible from the hallway. The other is in a private bedroom that adjoins another bedroom, both of which can be entered from the hall -- as long as you don't mind going through someone's bedroom. There are electric heaters in closets throughout the house that mean you can use the sunporch in perfect comfort almost year round -- and you should do this. It's the absolute best view in the house and a lovely mix of old, new, sea, and people-peeping. We had a major glitch when we arrived. The owners were very responsive. In the end, our four generations enjoyed their time here.

A real gem

Our time at your house beginning the week of August 2 was a wonderful experience. We celebrated our 50th anniversary by having our three girls, their husbands, and nine grandchildren ages 24 to 12. It couldn't have been a better place to celebrate. The boys had a great time playing basketball in the out building, especially on the one rainy afternoon that we had. One evening one of the boys played his guitar in the library with a fire and we sang songs and danced. Each morning we had coffee looking at Frenchmans bay. Most days were spent exploring the park. All 17 of us used Atlantic Climbing School and went rock climbing at Otter Cliffs. Your house was a perfect location for our family, and it is truly a treasure.

Wonderful vacation retreat for our gang of 14. Highly recommended!

14 in our gang....extended family teens - thru 96 yr olds. Houses/cabins at Camp O are very well prepared. Easy to eat en masse. Very happy to have been on the quiet side of the island - Bar Harbor is a bit hectic and touristy... Didn't miss being offline for week - should do it more often! Very much enjoyed kayaking, hiking, biking daily....and clamming on our private beach. We did eat out a few times, but in the end preferred to shop and eat lobsters that we cooked at Camp O at our leisure.... Great vacation - will do it again in the future.... Have already recommended it to some friends. Owners very helpful prior to our visit - many useful recommendations. The description of the place is quite accurate.
