Wabi Sabi Cottage in Alna, Maine is one of those rare gems where EVERYTHING is in perfect harmony! From the cheery sunflowers arching over the welcoming sign in front, to the freshly-washed sheets drying in the sun and soft breeze, to the tantalizing scent of homemade muffins baking, to the serene views of the water slowly rising and falling in the tidal river visible at the bottom of the sloping lawn, to the endlessly fascinating myriad of comfortable antiques…..everything has the effect of totally making whatever cares one might have vanish! And Joan, the owner, is also completely in tune with her guests, and an amazing multi-talented hostess. Bill is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The cottage, though not old, has been built to give the feel of yesteryear, while staying completely, unobtrusively up-to-date. There’s Wi-Fi, but the trappings of technology are all hidden away behind artfully designed cabinets, giving a welcome feel of "the way life used to be”. There are two guest rooms: the larger Sheepscot River Room, where we stayed, has a beautiful view of the river, and a roomy bathroom with two clawfoot soaking bathtubs, plus a shower. Joan’s absolutely wonderful breakfasts - served in a screened-in patio also overlooking the river, picturesque hen house, fresh vegetable garden, and sloping lawn – are amazing. Fresh-baked muffins, freshly homemade granola, fruits, a unique “French toast bread pudding”, or eggs+ any way you’d like. This is truly a wonderful find, and we plan to return as often as we can.
