Secluded Maine getaway

5 of 5
What a great place! The pictures and description of the house were as advertised, maybe better. The owners met us upon arrival to ensure we had everything we needed. They were excellent to deal with at every step of the rental process including the prompt return of our security & pet deposit. We brought our miniature schnauzer with no issues. She was able to use the fenced in yard allowing us to not have to put her on a leash every time she needed to go out. Our three children, ages 11-16, loved hanging out, climbing on the rocky coast in the back yard and playing board games left by the owners. The television has a satellite connection and was perfect when we wanted to use it. The WiFi was adequate for our needs, but if someone wanted fast connection speeds they may be disappointed. This home is truly secluded which we thoroughly enjoyed, but make no mistake, it is secluded. The nearest store of any kind is 15 minutes away by car. The owners directed us to the nearest fishing dock (10 min drive) where we went on two separate occasions to buy lobster and clams. The house is very well equipped for all of your cooking needs. The washer and drying worked well allowing us to catch up on laundry during our long road trip. The deck overlooks the water and is a perfect place to do nothing. The home, both inside and out, has lots of places to sit down with others or by yourself. Doors and windows all have screens allowing a wonderful breeze to move through the house. Acadia National Park is about 1 ½ hours away and worth the drive. Plan to spend a full day if you decide to make the trip. We did not use the two apartments on the property but they are right next to the main house and would be perfect for a larger gathering.

Absolutely Perfect!

We fell in love with this home and its location immediately! We were looking to "get away from it all" and we couldn't have asked for a better place. The house itself is gorgeous and we made ourselves at home instantly. Everything we needed, from lobster pots to firewood, and more, was available. Each and every inch of the house is charming and welcoming. The grounds are beautiful and the view of the bay and far-off islands is tranquil. We watched the sunset every night. One night, an eagle sat perched near us on a pine tree branch, apparently enjoying the sunset as well. We listened to lapping water day in and day out. At night, the stars were amazing! Not only was the view of the sky from the back deck gorgeous, but the stargazing continued at bedtime through the skylights of the bedroom. Our own private planetarium! We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet that the home and landscape provided for us and we look VERY forward to returning.

Just what we were looking for!

We arrived at this lovely cottage and were pleasantly surprised at such beautiful surroundings. The cottage is very well kept, clean and offers a nice sized refrigerator. There are great views from inside the cottage, should you be rained in, provided by the 2 sets of sliding glass doors. There is wi-fi, cable(with 2 tvs), music and a wonderful array of books to read, including children's books. Outside is a spacious deck overlooking the cove and beautiful flowers that the owners keep. Just sitting on the deck we were treated to hummingbirds, eagles, eiders, a loon, warblers and many other birds. If you are up to it, you can even clam the cove at low tide. Bring boots if you decide to do so! The owners occupy the home next door and they were more than respectful regarding our need for privacy. Other than that, there are no cottages around you and no outside bothersome noises, it was very private and serene. Herb was gracious enough to take our grandson out for a spin in his boat and also took my husband out to haul pots. He was also available to grab us lobsters fresh out of the water for dinner. I know of no other cottages where you get your own lobsterman! If Herb is unavailable, lobster is available from local docks. You can do your laundry right on the premises so if you fill your fridge, there is no reason to leave! I suppose some children may get bored here, but that depends on the kinds of kids they are. Mine would have loved it and my grandson did love it. You can explore the cove, the woods, and there is hiking nearby. Jonesport beach is a few miles away and is nice and sandy also offering a small rocky section perfect for glass picking. In the other direction you have Schoodic Point which is an awesome day visit and provides a few restaurants such as Fisherman's Inn, The Bunkers, and Chases Diner. If you are into golfing, there is golfing at the Grindstone Neck Golf course in Winter Harbor. The Blueberry House (a gift shop shaped like a blueberry) offers a small mini golf course for kids. If you are into fresh water swimming, there is a swimming pond called Jones Pond in Birch Harbor. There is also a small movie theater in Milbrige, along with a big grocery store and a nice little restaurant called 44 Degrees North. If you are feeling like a road trip, Lubec, Campobello Island, and the beautiful West Quoddy Head Lighthouse are only about 1-2 hours north and well worth the trip. I loved this place and we will definitely be going back. :)
