My family had grown up in Maine and would return to visit every summer, gathering at my grandparent's house in Hampden. This year, that house in Hampden was no longer in the family, so we went looking for a home that we could gather at and stay in. This house was absolutely perfect. We had 8 adults staying in the house, and my brother's family (3 adults, 3 kids) were at a campground nearby and could easily come to socialize. The house felt like home and everyone was very comfortable. We even had no problem finding room for 14 to sit and eat when the whole family was around.
We were a family of unique needs - one of my uncles has some minor medical issues and struggles with stairs. He also has a therapy dog that helps him stay active. This house had a first floor bedroom with an adjacent bath that was perfect for families that might have an elderly or otherwise impeded family member. There is even a nice outdoor pen for dogs to help them keep active.
The deck and the yard were beautiful and offered for some entertainment and relaxation. There is room for games (bocce, ladderball, etc.) and chairs to sit and watch the world go by. There was a grill with two propane tanks on the deck which allowed us to really enjoy the summer. One suggestion for the homeowner: Ask whoever turns over the house to check the grill and maybe give it a quick cleaning. When we arrived and went to grill the first night - whoever used it prior to our arrival had not cleaned it after it's last use, so there was a lot of stuff cooled onto the grates. If you are only renting for 3 summer months, the grill is a huge aspect.
For those who are not familiar with Maine and are considering the location - trust me when I tell you it's perfect. Having grown up in Maine, you are minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park, you are 15 minutes from Bar Harbor (the popular tourist location on the island), you are 10 minutes from multiple golf courses and you are 10 - 15 minutes from some of the other hidden gems on the island (Southwest Harbor, Jordan Pond House, etc.). You really will not find a more perfect location. Plus, the owner leaves some fantastic maps and regional guides to help find things to do and places to go.
