Great location, Beautifully restored

4 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at Machiya Momiji. Two couples travelling together, plenty of space to spread out and beautifully presented. Supermarket nearby so no problem purchasing breakfast items/snacks. Naoko responded to our emails promptly and assisted us with restaurant recommendations and our taxi back to the station at the end of our stay. She also recommended our guide in Kyoto (Mazda) who was great despite the rain setting at lunch time. Geisha area/river 5 minute walk, bus to all sights a 10 minute easy walk, Kiyomizudera 15 mins walk. In short we loved our stay, such a unique experience, comfy beds, gorgeous small outdoor garden and superb bathroom. We will certainly be telling our friends!

Charming house. Great hosts. Close to everything.

5 of 5
We loved the combo washer/dryer is extremely efficient and allows you to travel light. The house is spotlessly clean, comfortable, traditional and modern at the same time. We really appreciated the Western style bed after walking around the city each day. It is a lovely base to use while exploring the city. Although the bus and Keihan railway stops are only about 2 minutes away, we preferred to simply walk and occasionally jump in a cab. There is so much to see and do in Kyoto and the owner provided very precise information and assistance when we needed it as well as a lot of insider knowledge and restaurant recommendations. If you have the chance to meet Michi or Keith for welcome drinks or dinner we highly recommend it. Based on their knowledge and suggestions we believe we both saved a lot of time and money and also got more out of our stay. We are looking forward to returning to Kyoto and staying here again.

A special and warm Japanese experience

5 of 5
As people who had not visited Japan before and knew very little Japanese, we were, not surprisingly, a little anxious about our decision to stay in a traditional Japanese house rather than a Western style hotel. As our taxi came to a stop on a small back street in Kyoto, we were relieved to be met by our host who spoke fluent English. Not only did he hand us the keys, but he took the time to walk us through the property and acquaint us with all of its features. He also provided us with printouts of the local attractions organized by city sector. When the weather turned out to be unseasonably cool, he called to offer us winter coats, a gesture we very much appreciated. Recently remodeled, the house consists of a living room, kitchen, bathroom downstairs and a spacious tatami mat bedroom/sitting room upstairs. Everything was spotless. We were particularly impressed by the fine craftsmanship throughout. Although the house had some idiosyncratic features by Western standards, we found it easy to adjust to. We very much enjoyed the fact that we had not chosen to stay in a more conventional lodging. By the end of our five night stay, we had come to appreciate the personal connection we had established with our host and his family - including two utterly delightful little girls - who lived literally around the corner.
