The perfect Kyoto hide away.

5 of 5
Beautiful updates to a traditional home. Tastefully appointed with attention to every detail, including a well stocked refrigerator and ohagi from a neighborhood confectioners. Tucked away from a main thoroughfare it was the best of both worlds. Convenient for sightseeing... Walking distance to train subway major temples. Mako greeted us, and provided thorough and thoughtful instructions, including maps. We definitely found the ambience of Kyoto that we were hoping for, at this property. Family of five adults was more than comfortable.

Lovely

5 of 5
We loved our stay at Gagakuan. Such a beautiful Machiya, we were thrilled to stay in a traditional style Japanese home and this one was the perfect combination of modern convenience and old world architecture. Everything about it was perfect. The home was comfortable and immaculate, and it seems the owners have thought of everything a visitor might need. We stayed with our two young adult children and had plenty of room. The kitchen was very modern and well equipped and bathrooms had a lovely shower, large tub and yes, modern Japanese toilets. The beds, a queen and two singles were wonderfully comfortable, and the large upstairs bedroom with bathroom was open and roomy. Our host Saki was super informative and helpful. She met us at the house at our arrival providing us maps and directions to many of Kyoto's sights that we wanted to visit, along with recommendations for local restaurants and stores. Communication prior to our trip was excellent and during our stay she took great care in making sure we had everything we needed. There was even a bicycle provided and we rented a few more to bike around the city, it was so much fun. The house is very conveniently located not to far from Kyoto station and close enough for a quick taxi, bus or train ride to Kyoto's temples and parks. Gagakuan was such a wonderful place to stay, and made our trip to Kyoto even more memorable. We will be back!

Beautiful townhouse - too much street noise

4 of 5
We absolutely enjoyed staying in this beautifully refurbished traditional townhouse. It was well appointed and faultless in terms of cleanliness and convenience to interesting sights, restaurants and shopping. The bathrooms had an amazing fresh wood smell and spectacularly high-tech toilets and bathtubs. The futons on the floor, with buckwheat pillows, were quite comfortable and the heat worked very well. The house was exactly the same as many of the ones we saw while roaming the neighborhood in Gion and I would have been saying "I wonder what it looks like inside" or "I wonder what it would be like to live in one." The ONLY downside to the place is the street noise, which is absolutely no fault of the management and really nothing that can be helped, but if sensitive to outside noise while sleeping one might want to take this into consideration. Although the streets in this section of Gion are narrow cars, trucks and mopeds jostle around tourists and locals, literally day and all night. In fact on Saturday the police had cordoned off one side of the street with traffic cones for pedestrians to walk within - which was literally inches from the door of the machiya. I will mark that I will recommend this vacation rental to a friend because it really was so great, but with the caveat that they wear earplugs or can sleep through anything. It is truly a beautiful townhouse that I'm happy I had the chance to experience but for me, I think next time I'll look for someplace a little quieter.
