Great stay in outer Kyoto

5 of 5
This place was great! It was our third trip to Kyoto and our first staying somewhere other than a hotel. Worth it. Firstly, the communication with Hiro, the manager, was excellent. He was able to help us out in not time at all if there was any sort of problem. Not that we really had any. And Toshi, the owner, was just so awesome. Greeting us with a huge smile in his Kombi-van at the station and then giving us a quick tour of the area surrounding the apartment. Then so happy to see us and hear of our travel tales while we were staying there, as he picked us up once again to then see us off at the station. The apartment itself was nestled away in such a beautiful and quite neighborhood. Very easy to get to the shops, about 5-10 minute walk. There is a pharmacy, supermarket and a couple of 24hr convenience stores, all within reasonably close vicinity to each other. The apartment is quite spacious for those that are used to hotels. Going by other places that I have stayed throughout Japan this place is huge. As the pictures show, there is one bedroom with a double bed, one with two single beds, and a tatami room with two mattresses. For those traveling in the cooler times of year, there is adequate heating via a gas heater. One thing that was a blessing was a washer-dryer. No need to hang clothes outside! For those that are expecting to get around on a JR West rail pass, just be aware that the closest train station is not JR. The closest JR station is Saga-arashiyama. Unfortunately, I didn't to spend much time in the area. I would have really enjoyed seeing Toshi's cultural property and some of the temples off the beaten path. I would stay here again. It was a great apartment, Hiro and Toshi were great to deal with. I would certainly recommend this place to just about anyone.

Kamo Cottage, Kyoto Japan

5 of 5
Mike and Yuko’s Kamo Cottage is ideally located for those wanting to explore Kyoto. The river view and self-contained accommodations make for a great base. Bus and subway stops are located within easy walking distance and provide easy access to the Shinkansen, local trains or the inner city. Nearby community shopping coupled with the cottage’s cooking facilities provide an easy way to keep your food bill under control while living like a native. Mike and Yuko are both knowledgeable and gracious. Both speaking English is a special bonus when looking getting around or locating a place to purchase specialty items. We would recommend the Kamo Cottage for anyone, especially adventurous travelers, looking for a quiet refuge in Kyoto.

Delightful cottage - Fantastic location

5 of 5
Shirakawa Cottage is a cosy two-room cottage in the heart of Kyoto. It's a wonderful base to explore Kyoto as the location is terrific. There's so much nearby, but it's still so peaceful at night. The walk down the little lane-way and past the "White Stream" is also a charming way to start the morning. You could even leave your guidebook at home as there are several excellent books and other information on-hand in the cottage. Rory is a friendly and very considerate host. The renovation work inside the cottage is lovely and the bed is very comfortable. It's spotlessly clean, and the neighborhood is completely safe at night. We had a lovely time staying here and recommend it highly. We hope to stay longer next time.
